Winemaker's Notes:

Clos Du Val's flagship estate wine, the 2006 Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet in color with vibrant aromas of ripe black fruit and a hint of dried herbs, mocha coffee and toast. The wine has a rich, powerful entry, and concentrated mid-palate, filling the mouth with intense black fruit and spice. With its velvety-smooth tannins and elegant structure, this Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic expression of Stags Leap District terroir. The finish is long and lingering. Enjoy now or cellar for at least 20+ years.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Clos du Val Wine Co.:

About Clos du Val Wine Co.:

Clos Du Val, French for "small vineyard estate of a small valley," was founded in 1972 in the now legendary Stags Leap District by Franco-American entrepreneur John Goelet. After a worldwide search to purchase vineyard properties from which to craft world-class wines, 150 acres in Stags Leap and 180 acres in Carneros were chosen, solidifying Clos Du Val's iconic stature and formidable place in Napa Valley history.

Today, for Clos Du Val Winemaker Kristy Melton, it is the bounty from these renowned vineyards that acts as the foundation for the distinctive, terroir-driven wines of balance and elegance for which Clos Du Val is known.

Winemaker's Notes:

The nose consists of violets, black currant leaf, ripe wild berry and integrated spice of the Cabernet grape. Mulberry and blackberry are the dominant fruit flavors enhanced by a tight palate with silky grape tannins and elegant complex cedar oak, so typical of Penley Style. A very generous mid palate with a hints of licorice and chocolate lingers on the finish.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Penley Estate:

About Penley Estate:

Established in 1988, by Kym Tolley, a direct descendant of the famous Penfold and Tolley winemaking families – the name Penley is an amalgam of the first three and last three letters from each title.

Tolley has over 25 years of winemaking experience, including being involved in the making of many vintages of the famous Penfolds Grange. The estate is located in the heart of Coonawarra, with the vines planted in the famed "terra rossa" soils – bright red top-soils overlaying soft free-draining limestone.

Critically acclaimed as one of Coonawarra's leading estates, and voted as one of the International Wineries of the Year 2001 by Wine & Spirits Magazine, while the Reserve Cabernet voted best wine of Coonawarra 2001, as judged by winemaking peers and critics.

The Penley Estate signature style comprises distinct, precise, terrior driven wines – not overly oaked or excessively alcoholic. They display ripe clean fruit with true regional character – the senior wines will age for many years.

Winemaker's Notes:

The nose is full of blackcurrant and blueberry characters with a lovely mint leaf lift and a spicy undertone. The characters are ripe, yet remain balanced with touches of florals adding elegance.

Dark plum and red fruits are added to the mix before a savoury mid palate emerges with soil characters, hints of coffee, black olive and more spice framed well by fine gravelly tannins and just a hint of oak. Considering the vintage conditions the generous fruit flavor is surprisingly well balanced by soil characters, flowers and leafy lift along with good tannin structure.

Like all d'Arenberg wines decanting will help this wine show its true colours and it will age gracefully in the cellar for up to seven years.

My Notes:

Additional wines from d'Arenberg:

About d'Arenberg:

One of the undisputed kings of Australian Shiraz and Rhone varietals, d'Arenberg has managed to turn individuality into an art form by doing a whole lot of little things differently. The original vineyards were established by Joseph Osborn in 1912 in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia. A century on, the estate has grown to 345 acres, and the mantle now rests with fourth-generation winemaker, Chester Osborn. By maintaining a focus on traditional winemaking and nurturing their old-vine material, the Osborn clan has successfully established themselves as one of the country's leading producers of concentrated wines that are full of character.

Winemaker's Notes:

Brunello Tenuta Nuova began as both a passionate and scientific project, for a wine which only Casanova di Neri can offer. It comes from a mass clone of Sangiovese Cerretalto on a piece of land south of Montalcino, where it acquires "Mediterranean" scents, great finesse and tannic structure.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Casanova di Nieri:

About Casanova di Nieri:

Casanova di Neri was established in 1971 when Giovanni Neri acquired a large estate within Montalcino. Over the years their continuing goal has been the search for land believed to be optimal for growing high quality grapes. There are now 120 acres of vineyards divided amongst four distinct sites. Improved quality in the vineyards has led to more attention in the winery, from vinification to the careful selection of casks for aging but always with the maximum respect for tradition. Today the property is operated and wines made by Giacomo Neri, who states, "Our greatest pride is our vineyards: their high quality and their history."

Winemaker's Notes:

The Antica Napa Valley 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon offers delicious purity of fruit with enticing violet and fresh berry scents of blueberry, blackberry and red currant. The wine is full-bodied, yet graceful and supple, ending with a long, pure, and persistent finish.

Antica is an Antinori Family estate in Napa Valley. The family's winemaking heritage dates back 26 generations and more than 600 years in Italy. 'Antica' represents Antinori California, and fulfills the family's longstanding desire to produce wines with personality and style in Napa Valley. The estate is located in a high elevation valley in the eastern mountains of Napa Valley. It is the Antinori Family's belief that the high elevations, hilly terrain, and rocky soils of the estate are ideal for winegrowing.

About the Vineyard:
Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were harvested from nine individual vineyard blocks, divided between five distinct clones. The estate's Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards are planted up to an elevation of 1,800 feet allowing excellent air movement in the well-drained, volcanic soils.

About the 2009 Vintage:
Temperatures throughout the winter months were mild with below normal rainfall, marking a third consecutive year of drought conditions for Napa Valley. A dry spring with slightly higher temperatures than normal provided excellent weather conditions for fl owering and uniform fruit set. Dry conditions prevailed throughout the summer and early fall. Warm daytime temperatures along with cool night time temperatures into the autumn months assured healthy and completely ripe Cabernet Sauvignon grapes rich in winemaking potential.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Antica:

About Antica:

ANTICA is a symbol for Antinori California and expresses in Italian our family's passion for winemaking passed along 26 generations.

Napa Valley has a special place in my heart beginning with my first visit in 1966, having the free spirit coming from a new frontier, a wonderful history, and the potential to produce world-class wines.

Our wine estate is located on a high plain in the eastern mountains of the celebrated Napa Valley. Its hilly terrain, rocky soils, high elevations and beautiful landscape create above all an estate ideal for winegrowing.

Winemaker's Notes:

The nose of this wine is especially interesting to me. There's the presence of a well-cared for, clean farmstead. Possibly the aroma of a freshly opened bale of hay or the combine dust during the summer harvest at my cousins wheat farm in St. John, Washington. This is layered with the fruit components- ripe cherries crushed in a snifter, a subtle smell of ripeness. And a bit of grape pumice at fermentation, rustic. Other nuances come to mind- smoke in a forest cabin, earth, spice and cola.

The flavors in this wine are genuinely good, but the textural elements are its most exceptional feature. The entry wanders, deliberating, then evolves and expands to cocoa- like fine tannins in harmony with oak, fruit and acidity. A balanced and harmonious wine with a long evolution.

About Caymus:

As the Wagner family celebrated the 40th anniversary of Caymus Vineyards in 2012, they thought back to 1972 which Charlie Wagner, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner and their son, Chuck, built their winery among the vines planted on the family's ranch in Rutherford, California - the center of the Napa Valley. In 1975, the Wagners produced their first Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, which remains the only wine to have twice been named Wine Spectator's "Wine of the Year" (1984 and 1990 vintage).

Winemaker's Notes:

Our 2007 Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon combines elegance and depth in a balanced expression of this classic California vintage. It has a dark ruby color with a garnet edge and a complex nose of sandalwood, cedar, cassis, black cherry, dark chocolate and roasted coffee. On the palate, it is extremely rich and mouth-coating and has a long finish of concentrated fruit and spice with a slight tannic grip. This wine is remarkable in how it continues to evolve in the glass over the course of a meal. It has great maturity of aromas and tannins at moderate alcohol. With proper cellaring, this wine should give drinking pleasure through 2033.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Silver Oak Napa Valley:

About Silver Oak Napa Valley:

Silver Oak Cellars was started in 1972 with a simple driving philosphy - to focus production on only one varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon. What's more, they resolved to create a wine with a style all its own: not another hard, tannic red wine requiring years of aging to enjoy, but a wine of fully developed flavors and a velvety soft texture on the day it is released for sale.

Silver Oak Cellars produces Cabernet Sauvignon from two appellations. Their Napa Valley derives its fruit from both owned and contracted vineyards, and is produced entirely at their Oakville winery. Beginning in 1994, small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot have been included in their Napa blend to add complexity and softness.

Silver Oak also produces stellar Cabernet from their Alexander Valley vineyards. A critical reason for the success of this wine, and every wine they make, has always been that they create the final blend before aging it in American oak barrels and then bottles. Over the course of four-and-a-half years, the wine’s flavors, aromas, and textures have an opportunity to meld with one another and the wood’s delicate qualities to create the kind of graceful cohesion found only in the world's most elegant wines.
