Winemaker's Notes:

Can't fault this wine for its color. It is deep ruby garnet in tone. The nose reminds you of cherry pie and vanilla ice cream. The deep red fruit flavors prevail along with a hint of rich Nubian leather and possibly plum and cherry preserve. There's also a shake of white pepper in the back palate with a plump finish that continues to roll around your mouth smiling.

Additional wines from Roco:

About Roco:

Rollin and Corby Soles planted their small Wits' End Vineyard, located on the southwest slope of the Chehalem Mountains, in 2001. Two years later they produced their first vintage, four barrels of the 2003 Private Stash Pinot Noir. They were so delighted with the wine that they decided to produce two separate ROCO Pinot Noirs each vintage: the Private Stash and Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. Rollin brings more than twenty years of Oregon winemaking experience, a passion for Pinot Noir and insistence on the highest winemaking standards to this private family venture.

Winemaker's Notes:

The Perbacco is made from parcels all planted in the Barolo region, and more precisely in Bricco Boschis, Liste, Brunella, Rocchettevino, Pernanno, Ravera di Monforte and Scarrone. The average age of the vines is 35 years. All vineyards are vinified and aged separately until the moment the casks are selected for single vineyard or blended wines.

The work in the vineyards, the yield, the vinification system and the aging period for the Perbacco are the same as the Barolo Castiglione, however, unlike most Barolos, Perbacco shows elegance and approachability at a very young age. This vintage was a beautiful one for Barolo, and this wine offers up generous fruit along with menthol, spices, and a hint of caramel, showing notable intensity and power while retaining an essentially mid-weight style.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Vietti:

About Vietti:

The history of the Vietti winery traces its roots back to the 19th Century. Only at the beginning of the 20th century, however, did the Vietti name become a winery offering its own wines in bottle. Patriarch Mario Vietti, starting from 1919 made the first Vietti wines, selling most of the production in Italy. His most significant achievement was to transform the family farm, engaged in many fields, into a grape-growing and wine-producing business.

Then, in 1952, Alfredo Currado (Luciana Vietti’s husband) continued to produce high quality wines from their own vineyards and purchased grapes. The Vietti winery grew to one of the top-level producers in Piemonte and was one of the first wineries to export its products to the USA market.

Alfredo was one of the first to select and vinify grapes from single vineyards (such as Brunate, Rocche and Villero). This was a radical concept at the time, but today virtually every vintner making Barolo and Barbaresco wines offers "single vineyard" or "cru-designated" wines.

Alfredo is also called the "father of Arneis" as in 1967 he invested a lot of time to rediscover and understand this nearly-lost variety. Today Arneis is the most famous white wine from Roero area, north of Barolo. Setting such a fine example with Arneis, even fellow vintners as far away those on the west coast of the United States now are cultivating and producing Arneis!

With 35 hectares of vineyards, Vietti expects to not only increase production, but having greater control over the vineyards, looks to continually improve from a qualitative perspective. It is poised to excel well into the 21st Century.

Winemaker's Notes:

This Sonoma Coast 2010 Pinot Noir is deep garnet color with ruby highlights. This Pinot Noir has expressive aromas of dark berry fruit, black tea, and dried cranberry with earthy nuances of oregano, spice and sweet tobacco. Delivering flavors of ripe plum, fig, orange and licorice this wine is bold; yet, graceful on the palate with supple tannins and a lingering coastal minerality on the finish.

Additional wines from Flowers:

About Flowers:

As nursery owners in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Walt and Joan Flowers had long dreamed of combining their love of wine with their passion for agriculture. They knew they wanted to produce their favorite varietals, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir; what they didn't know what that their path would eventually lead them across the country to Northern California's rugged Sonoma Coast. In 1989, Walt and Joan purchased 321 acres, including a ridge top, high above the Pacific Ocean on the northern Sonoma Coast. Today, Flowers Winery produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from its two estate properties, Camp Meeting Ridge Vineyard and Sea View Ridge Vineyard, as well as select vineyards in the coolest regions of the Sonoma Coast AVA, which are famed to Flowers' specifications by their own crews.

"Stella," as Northstar affectionately refers to this Reserve red blend, is always a fun wine to create and the 2008 vintage is no exception. Layers of smoke, vanilla, spice, raspberry, and cherry flavors on a soft and silky palate make this a very approachable, versatile wine that can be enjoyed with everything from pizza to prime rib.

Deep red color with a tint of purple. Red berries and "garrigues" aromas, which is the name for those wild bushes such as thyme, laurel and rosemary. Supple and aromatic on the palate with a harmony between the nose and the mouth (sweet spices). Full and lively, this wine is elegant with soft tannins. "Les Garriguettes" reflects this unique Mediterranean terroir.

Winemaker's Notes:

Chateau de Montfort Vouvray is an elegant, fine wine characterized by brilliant fruit aromas and excellent structure. Aromas of Granny Smith apples and Anjou pear dominate, with a hint of wet stone minerality. The initial fruit sweetness is perfectly complimented by a true zing of bracing acidity and minerality. The finish is long and satisfying, and the overall impression is of a tremendously refreshing wine.
My Notes:

About Chateau de Montfort:

Chateau de Montfort is a stunning historic estate located on the limestone plateau above the Loire River in the Touraine region. Originally a fortified farmhouse dating back to the 14th Century, this historic property covers approximately 75 acres of premium quality land across Vouvray AOC and Touraine AOC.

The vineyards of Chateau de Montfort, based in clay and limestone soils on a bedrock of chalky limestone tufo, are predominantly planted to Chenin Blanc. The estate is somewhat unique in that most of its vines are located surrounding the winemaking facility in one large parcel. Average vine age is over 50 years, limiting yields and providing great concentration and depth in the wine.

The 2009 Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon offers inviting aromas of black cherry cola, red cherry, vanilla bean and cocoa powder along with a touch of clove and sage. These notes carry over onto the palate and combine with flavors of milk chocolate, toasty oak and hint of wintergreen. The wine has a smooth texture with great depth and fine-grained tannins. The vibrant fruit, great structure and balanced acidity make this wine pair extremely well with hardy dishes such as braised short ribs or filet mignon with a Cabernet and wild mushroom demi-glace.

#22 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2013

Clean, bright dark-cherry red of medium depth with a pink rim. Notably expressive nose with spicy notes of coffee, chocolate, vanilla and cloves and fine wood aromas against a background of ripe dark fruit. It is a well-structured, balanced wine with a lively, enticing freshness that combines with polished tannins to fill the mouth with pleasurable sensations. Long aftertaste, marked by the subtlety of a brand whose traditional elegance, complexity and aromatic power are particularly enriched in this vintage.

An excellent wine to accompany charcoal-grilled meat, roasts, small game, medium-aged cheeses, Iberian cured sausages, etc.

A deep, opaque cherry color, with strong purple hues. The nose has a very high fruit intensity of blackberries, raspberries, blackberries and black licorice, which are combined with roasted and spicy flavors typical of aging in French oak. On the palate, it is very fleshy and dense, very broad. It has balanced acidity, soft tannins and long, fruity and spicy finish. A treat to the palate and the senses...
