Winemaker's Notes:

Charcuterie, white and black pepper, tobacco and leather seduce the senses immediately. Cherry, blackberry and blueberry all laced with floral hints and blood orange prepare the palate. An iron ferrous quality runs through with long and chewy tannins. The finish will linger with more notes of cured meats, smoke and mulberry. This Syrah illustrates why we love this varietal and will offer hours of enjoyment as she reveals her secrets (if you can wait that long).

Blend: 97% Syrah and 3% Viognier

My Notes:

Additional wines from Donkey and Goat:

About Donkey and Goat:

Donkey & Goat is a family owned and operated winery located in Berkeley California. Tracey & Jared Brandt craft their natural wines from Rhône varietals, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown in the Anderson Valley, Mendocino Ridge and the undiscovered El Dorado appellation in the Sierra Foothills. Tracey & Jared trained in France, under Éric Texier, an up and coming Rhône winemaker who taught them the art and craft of making wines that speak to the soul about the earth from which they originate. Their maverick winemaking has helped pave the way for the natural wine movement.

They make their wines for the table not the cocktail glass. They make Rhône varietals in both colors plus an atypical Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir true to the varietals nature, striving to make wine as naturally as possible and done so since day one.

Winemaker's Notes:

The color is a deep brooding red/ black leading to a bouquet of dark chocolate and blood plums. The palate is rich and soft in keeping with the Eight Songs style and the finish features plush, fine grained tannins. The wine drinks beautifully now but can be cellared with confidence for a few more years if desired. We recommend decantering for a few hours before serving to allow the wine to open up.

Winemaker's Notes:

Platinum, yellow-green hues, with lovely white stone fruits, hard Christmas candy, lemon zest, orange marmalade or sugared peel, spice, cherry preserves, and minerality on the nose. White peach, citrus, allspice, and mineral flavors continue on the palate, but with a huge, sweet, fruit-cocktail impression countered by great acidity. The wine speaks impressively of weight, balance, firmness, and richness.

Winemaker's Notes:

Verdelho is a semi-aromatic white grape that was traditionally used in the production of the revered wines of the island of Madeira. Verdelho has found popularity with forward thinking vintners from around the world in the production of delicious table wines. This bottling is full bodied with tropical and citrus fruit aromas with grapefruit, melon and apple flavors. This refreshing wine can be enjoyed as an aperitif or served with seafoods or Pacific Rim cuisine.

Verdelho's aroma and bouquet is unique and reminds me of citrus flowers and ripe Casaba melon. Its palate weight is more full-bodied than many other white wines.

My Notes:

About Bodegas Godeval:

In 1974 a group of viticulturists, in conjunction with the Agriculture Research Department of the Ministry of Agriculture in Spain, created the program Revival (Valdeorras Vineyards Restoration). Since the very first moment, Godello has been thought to be the best grape of the appellation. In 1985, two of the researchers, Horacio Fernandez and Jose Luis Bartolome, and other partners created Bodegas Godeval, releasing the first 100% Godello wine in Galicia . Bodegas Godeval is one of the first estate-bottled wineries in Galicia . This truly pioneering winery deserves respect for recovering this grape for Spanish winemaking, in an area in which wine has been made since the times of Roman occupation. The winery is located in the surroundings of the 13th-century monastery of San Miguel of Xagoaza, in the mountains next to El Barco de Valdeorras, in the province of Orense (Galicia), in the northwest of Spain . They own 38.4 acres (16 ha) of Godello grapes, in different parcels on the hills surrounding the winery, with good exposure to midday sun. The vines are trellistrained. Average production is 6000 kg/ha, or 44 hectoliters per hectare, half of the local maximum allowed. The vineyards are located on the mountain slopes, and are therefore in terraces. The composition of the soil is of metamorphic slate, although you could find granite in other vineyards of the appellation. Planted at 1,350-1,650 feet (450-550 m) above sea level. Bodegas Godeval was the first producer to plant on the mountain slopes in modern history. The climate is continental with a great Atlantic influence; approximately 40 inches of rain a year. The appellation is located on the banks of the Sil River, and in general, most of the vineyards have a north-to-south orientation.

Winemaker's Notes:

Pale gold with bright green tinges. Aromas of lemons, white peach and hazelnut are supported by hints of wheatmeal and French oak. A powerful expression of ripe Chardonnay – citrus and figs – balanced with creamy midpalate complexity, and typically fine acid structure.
My Notes:

About Stonier:

In 1978, Brian Stonier and his wife Noel established the Stonier vineyard in the coastal town of Merricks, one hour southeast of Melbourne and ten minutes from the challenging surf beaches of Bass Straight. Over 28 years later, the name Stonier is widely recognized as a producer of exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

At the heart of Stonier lies a meticulous approach to viticulture and winemaking. A desire to reflect the imprint of each site, through subtle variations in flavor and texture, has earned Stonier a place amongst the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producers in Australia. Early vintages were made off-site until the winery in Merricks, designed by Daryl Jackson, was completed in 1991.

Today, Stonier sources Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from over 150 acres across 5 selected sub-regions: Merricks North, Balnarring, Tuerong, Red Hill and at the estate vineyards in Merricks which span over 50 acres. Grapes from each of the vineyards are vinified separately to allow ultimate flexibility when finally blending the wine to form the two distinct styles of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the Stonier Label and Stonier Reserve wines. An unswerving focus on style and structure ensures that the wines reflect the diverse flavors and texture of fruit sourced from across these five sub-regions without any one aroma or flavor dominating the final wine.

Winemaker's Notes:

The appearance is opaque dark ruby with reddish hues. On the nose, this wine shows black currant, blackberry compote, juniper berry and dark chocolate, with cinnamon and clove. The oak is well integrated with a slight nuance of aromatic cedar. The flavor has full cherry-berry notes with cassis and a fleshy mid-palate over a bed of resolved tannins. A very inviting wine, it is full flavored from start to finish, with a very long lingering fruitfulness.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Freemark Abbey:

About Freemark Abbey:

The history of Freemark Abbey began in 1886, when Josephine Marlin Tychson became the first woman to build and operate a winery in California. The historic site where Josephine's winery, Tychson Cellars, once stood is now known as Freemark Abbey.

Josephine, a native of San Lorenzo, California and her husband, John Tychson, a Danish immigrant, moved to St. Helena in 1881. For $8,500, they purchased 147 acres north of St. Helena, which later became known as "Tychson Hill".

Shortly after her husband's untimely death, Josephine began construction of a fifty square foot redwood winery which would grow to hold a capacity of about 30,000 gallons. In addition, she hired Nils Larsen, an experienced vintner, as her foreman. Josephine successfully produced wine for the next eight years and then sold the winery to Larsen in 1894. In turn, Larsen leased the winery to Antonio Forni, a good friend of Josephine's. Forni later purchased the property in 1898. Forni is responsible for building a new winery on the old site of the Tychson structure.

In the years that followed, Freemark Abbey went through a period of several different owners until 1966, when a group of partners purchased the winery. In 1993, Winemaker Ted Edwards became a partner. Edwards assumed the role of managing partner in addition to maintaining the responsibilities he has held as winemaker since 1985.

Winemaker's Notes:

Margaret River Chardonnay has developed a strong reputation and following throughout the world. Vasse Felix has developed a more modern style of Chardonnay, embracing the fruit, some solids in the juice and the natural yeast from the vineyard. We do not stimulate malo-lactic fermentation which in turn results in greater preservation of the natural acids from the vineyard. The fruit is picked earlier to also help preserve the natural acids and keep the alcohol lower, resulting in a tighter, more refreshing style of Chardonnay. Additional complexities are gained from barrel fermentation and lees' stirring which also helps to build texture.

The 2009 Vasse Felix Chardonnay is pale straw in colour with a bright green hue. It has complex, fragrant aromas with lovely biscuit characters and hints of lemon and subtle vanilla. The oak is beautifully integrated, sitting perfectly with the perfume of fine Margaret River Chardonnay. The wine arrives vibrant and fresh on the palate, with a beautiful silky texture and hints of citrus, stone fruit and biscuit stretching fine and long through the palate. The wine finishes with fresh acidity and subtle hints of spicy oak. The 2010 release is long, textured and a beautiful example of Margaret River Chardonnay. This release is ready to be enjoyed now and will continue to develop further complexity and richness if cellared carefully over the next 3 - 5 years.
