Winemaker's Notes:

This Eroica shows the crisp acidity of the 2007 vintage, which was the best acidity holding year in the past five years. The wine delivers mandarin orange and sweet lime aromas and flavors with subtle mineral notes. The cooler September, along with selecting fruit from higher elevation and cooler sites, contributed to the mouth-watering acidity balanced by beautiful Washington Riesling fruit.

An amazing pairing with sweet, flavorful Dungeness crab.

My Notes:

About Eroica:

Launched in 1999, Eroica is a labor of love for two of the world's great Riesling producers. One from the Old World, Dr. Loosen estate of Germany, and the other from the New World, Chateau Ste. Michelle of Washington state. An intermingling of Old and New World philosophies and technique enables the crafting of an extraordinary Riesling from Washington state grapes. Named for Beethoven's Third Symphony, Eroica reflects not only its variety and site, but also its heritage: bold and forward from its Washington roots, elegant and refined from German inspiration.

The first five vintages of Eroica Riesling (1999-2003) were named to Wine Spectator's "Top 100" list.

"I have long believed that a Riesling revival would have to start with a prominent New World winery like Chateau Ste. Michelle."
- Ernst Loosen, Dr. Loosen estate

The Wine Advocate rating: 90 points
PRICE ON 11/29/2014: $8.79

Winemaker's Notes:

"In its fascinating nose of pear, lemon, apple blossom, tangerine rind, nut oils, and white truffle, the 2005 Pinot Blanc Kritt reflects its generous component of ripe Auxerrois, and also somewhat suggests the character of a truffly 1996 Sancerre. Imposingly creamy in texture and palpably dense, this clings with juicy pear fruit, rich nuttiness, pungent citrus zest and subtly salty, stony mineral suggestions. Lovely though it is now, there is no need to rush to drink up a Kreydenweiss Kritt in anything less than five years from the vintage. Why aren't there more outstanding values like this out there, not even from less-prestigious growers? (Incidentally, Kreydenweiss has planted Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois in his Kastelberg, and these will in future inform a separate bottling.)"

#61 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2009

The blend, albeit varying slightly depending on vintage conditions, is 85% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The best selections are blended and aged 1 year in oak (80% in Slavonian barrels, 20% in barrique) + at least 6 months in the bottle, achieving a graceful balance of voluptuous berry tones and flexible yet sturdy backbone. Dark ruby in color, its bouquet of leather, earth, herbs, black cherries, licorice and plums is confirmed on the medium to full-bodied palate – round, spicy, elegant, attractively fruity and extremely versatile with any fare from pasta or risotto, to meat, fowl and cheese. Moreover, the Empsons' judicious pricing policy makes it "consistently one of Italy's better values". Food-friendly, pocket-friendly, all-around simpatico.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Castello di Monte Antico:

About Castello di Monte Antico:

Neil Empson and renowned oenologist Franco Bernabei conjunctly orchestrate this all-Sangiovese varietal from Tuscany's very finest vineyard sites. Having access to the region's top crus and ideal microclimates means they can pick and choose according to harvest conditions, achieving consistent excellence with each vintage.

The superlative characteristics of chosen locations and strict quality parameters make for the wine's depth, structure, character and longevity.

Terrain includes compact, very fine-textured limestone, at an altitude of 400-450 meters above sea level; rocky, clayey/calcareous areas, also at altitudes around 400 meters; and clayey/siliceous/calcareous soil, at an altitude of 250-300 meters: a cross-section of Tuscany's best.

Winemaker's Notes:

This Sauvignon Blanc is clear with nice green reflections. The nose has the traditional aromas of Sauvignon Blanc, which are particularly expressive and typical: boxwood, gorse and exotic fruit (pineapple and lime). In the mouth, it is fresh, very juicy and balanced with good persistence. The grapes from Casablanca and Leyda bring minerals to the wine as well as elegance.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Los Vascos:

About Los Vascos:

Los Vascos traces its roots to approximately 1750 and to the original vineyard of Miguel Echenique. The vineyard passed down through the family throughout the succeeding centuries.

The acquisition of 50% of Los Vascos by Rothschild (Lafite) in 1988 was the result of a careful search among more than one hundred Chilean wines for one that could meet their criteria for excellence. A team of winemakers from Domaine Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) control the viticulture, harvest, maceration, fermentation and aging of the wines at Los Vascos. Strict control of yields from the estate and adherence to the winemaking techniques of Chateau Lafite result in wines of high quality, whose characteristics do not escape connoisseurs. All production is estate bottled.

Inky and dense with attractive berry aromas and a touch of cinnamon and sweet spice. A fully, fruity wine, with excellent body, intense tannins, flavors of cherry, blackberry, boysenberry and plum intermingled with hints of cardamom and pepper, and a long, full finish.

My Notes:

About Trumpeter:

Bodega La Rural was founded in 1885 by Don Felipe Rutini. From Italy, he brought with him his oenological degree and the vast experience he had acquired from his father's vineyards. The first vines were planted in Maipu, Mendoza and the winery was installed with French Oak barrels and the best in modern machinery. Under his work ethic, "Labor and Perseverance," four generations of the Rutini family continued his legacy. They brought together hard work and the most advanced technologies in viticulture in the search for excellence in oenology.

Today, the winery boasts stainless steel tanks, two pneumatic presses, imported crushers, vacuum pumps and filters, in addition to 500 new French Oak barrels. Over the last couple of years, the Trumpeter wines have soared to new heights in popularity in the United States. Offering four varietals: a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Malbec, Bodega La Rural has crafted new wines with attractive new labels that have created quite a stir in the media. These wines have received praise in many respected publications ranging from Wine Spectator and Wine & Spirits magazine to the Washington Post daily newspaper.

Complex aromas of dark fruit (black cherry and blackberry) mixed with hints of cedar, vanilla and coffee on the nose. On the palate, the wine is velvety, full bodied and intense. The savory flavors of dark fruit, licorice and spices are well blended with an elegant toasting. Long finish with soft tannins.
My Notes:

About Ercavio:

Mas Que Vinos is the brainchild of a group of friends, Margarita Madrigal, Gonzalo Rodriguez, and Alexandra Schmedes. Having renovated an old family winery which dates to 1851, the three sought to preserve as much as they could from the original property, including the old tinajas (clay amphors) which are still used today for the malolactic fermentation.

La Mancha is one of the few areas of Spain that benefits from one single climate instead of two or three such as Rioja and Ribera del Duero. This Continental climate favors the extremes, with very cold winters and very hot summers. In the summer, and because of the altitude (often over 700 meters), the nights are quite cool which is perfect for an grape maturation. Soils in the zone are usually clay and limestone, with small patches of granite.

Mas Que Vinos works with two varietals with which many American buyers may not be familiar. Cencibel, a red varietal, is simply another name for Tempranillo when grown in certain areas of Central and Southern Spain. Arien, equally as unknown, is Spain’s most widely planted white varietal. Bunches are large and very tightly packed and alcohol levels tend to be between 13% and 14%. Often it is added to a blend for texture, but as it tends to be lower in alcohol in the area near Mas Que Vinos and the aromatics quite interesting, the property has decided to make it the centerpiece of their white wine.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Finca Luzon:

About Finca Luzon:

The estate was founded by the Gil family in 1916. For almost a century now they have strived to create wines that not only reflect the terroir of Jumilla but have an intense expression of the fruit and represent a good value in the market. They have achieved this goal through meticulous vineyard management and by adopting the latest technologies of winemaking available. The winery is located west of the town of Jumilla.

The grapes are sourced from the family-owned estate of 216 acres. The estate is surrounded by small mountains, 60 miles from the Mediterranean Sea. The vineyards are at the altitude of 1,500-2,100 ft. The soils are a combination of sand and chalk covered with chalky gravel and stones. Jumilla has a continental climate due to the high altitude of the region, despite the proximity of the Mediterranean Sea; there are large fluctuations in temperature from day to night during the growing season and cold winters. Rainfall is scant.

#83 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2009

Dark cherry color with purple tones. In the nose it has powerful aromas of red berries, toast, leather and smoke from aging in oak barrels. Good structure with ripe blackberry and blueberry notes and sweet tannins. The palate is very rich with an elegant balance between fruit, alcohol and oak. Pair with roasted or braised meat, lamb, pork or game, braised vegetables, mushrooms, poultry and baked or grilled fish with hearty sauces, smoked seafood, blue cheese and cured meats.

Aged in French oak for 12 months. 100% Monastrell from 45 year old vines in Jumilla where a harsh, arid climate and shallow, chalky soils on a bed of limestone and rock, combine to produce very low yields.

"The 2006 Juan Gil is also 100% Monastrell but aged for 12 months in French and American oak. It was sourced from an estate vineyard with 45 years of age. This purple-colored wine offers superb aromatics of wood smoke, damp earth, violets, and blueberry pie. Layered, succulent, and long, it will evolve for another 2-3 years and be at its best from 2010 to 2018."
-Wine Advocate

"Dark purple. Spicy blackberry and cassis on the nose. Refreshingly bitter cherry and dark berry skin flavors are brightened by zesty minerality and firmed by dusty tannins, picking up subtle iron and graphite qualities with air. Finishes with very good focus and youthful grip, the cherry note repeating. I like this wine's energy."
-International Wine Cellar

My Notes:

About Bodegas Hijos de Juan Gil:

This winery originated in 1916, when Juan Gil Giménez, great-grandfather of the present generation, started getting involved in the world of wine, building a winery in the heart of Jumilla. His son, Juan Gil Guerrero, dedicated his life to this world. But the ones who really consolidated the project were Juan Gil González and his brother Paco, the founder's grandsons. They forged an image of quality, efficiency and reliability which the present generation is trying to maintain and improve as much as possible.

At present, the Gil Vera family, Juan Gil Lencina's great-grandchildren, are the owners of Bodegas Juan Gil. They decided to start a new cellar on the property that the family owns in Jumilla, in order to get it adapted to the market. This new cellar is situated in "Término de Arriba" in the northwest of the city. It is so called because it is the highest point in Jumilla. It has been a winegrowing area for centuries and yields grapes of extraordinary quality.

The Côtes-du-Rhône Saint Esprit is made from a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Carignan grapes, which come from a small village in the Ardeche region. The vineyard's southern exposure on steep granite hillsides provides the best growing conditions for the vines.

The Cuvée Saint Esprit shows the strength and a pepper taste typical of the Syrah grape. The color is deep garnet red and has intense red berry aromas. It is an exceptional full-bodied wine with fine tannins.

Additional wines from Delas Freres:

About Delas Freres:

Founded over 160 years ago, Delas Frères was acquired by Champagne Deutz in 1977.

Delas Frères cultivates vineyards on the steep granite slopes of the northern Rhône, in some of the region's most prestigious appellations. Additional grapes are supplied through long-term agreements with southern Rhone growers dedicated to providing only top quality grapes.

Crafted by winemaker Jacques Grange to epitomize finesse and elegance, recent Delas Frères vintages from the vineyards of Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Côte Rôtie, Condrieu, Côtes-du-Rhône and Côtes-du-Ventoux have won renewed praise for their intensity of flavor and excellent value.
