Additional wines from Concannon:

About Concannon:

A historic and once-famous Livermore winery, Concannon was bought and sold several times in the 1980's by large conglomerates that were purchasing each other. Each sale resulted in a loss of focus, and the brand suffered. In 1992 Eric Wente of Wente Vineyards saved it from the jaws of destruction by assembling a group of eight investors to buy the winery. However, Concannon Vineyard is a totally separate company in both ownership and operation from Wente Vineyards.

Nestled amidst the vineyards and rolling hills along the Livermore Valley, Concannon has been widely recognized for crafting full-flavored, complex and award-winning wines. Ocean air pours through the Golden Gate each afternoon cooling the influence of the sun, and enabling the grapes to develop both the ripe sugars and firm acids that fine wine demands.

Concannon is perfectly positioned geologically, atop a 600-foot-deep bed of gravelly soil. These rocks require the vines to drive their roots deep into mineral-rich deposits, and it also keeps the grape and cluster size in moderation.

More than 140 of Concannon's 200 Livermore estate acres are Petite Sirah plantings grafted onto improved rootstocks. Over the decades, they have carefully tuned their planting and trellising to take full advantage of the unique terroir. The result: intensely flavored, memorable wines vintage after vintage.

Smoking Loon Pinot Noir 2009
(search item no. 107552)

PRICE ON 7/29/2014: $11.79

Winemaker's Notes:

Light garnet in color, fresh crushed raspberries, strawberries, and cranberries are all in the aroma of this bright, fruit-driven Pinot Noir, with a hint of cinnamon stick and spice in the background. On the palate, pomegranate and cranberry fruit have a zesty appeal, paired with the subtle, classic underbrush character that distinguishes Pinot Noir. Moderately light bodied, the soft tannins and fresh acidity strike a nice balance, creating a light fnish with red fruit and a touch of spice. Overall, this red wine shows genuine Californian winemaking at its best, with flavors that are approachable yet entertainingly complex.

Our 2009 Smoking Loon Pinot Noir gets its fresh character from a number of cool climate California growing regions, including Monterey, Anderson Valley, Santa Barbara, and pairs nicely with pork and savory sandwiches. Try a roast pork loin or the ever-popular Thanksgiving turkey-and-cranberry sandwich with this versatile red.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2008 season in Martinborough with mid summer warmth and a favorable ripening period has produced a classic Pinot Noir. This Martinborough Pinot Noir was made with traditional Burgundian techniques including a pre-fermentation maceration, which allows wild yeast to initiate the fermentation and a post-fermentation maceration to ensure the complex tannin structure. After pressing it was matured in French oak casks for 9 months.

Good red color. Intense ripe fruit flavors of classic red and black berry fruits with a supple savoury note backed by pleasant oak characters. The palate is full, round and lingering with fine balance.

My Notes:

About Vine Hill Winery:

There is something really satisfying about seeing a long-held dream unfolding before your eyes. Such is the circumstance in which Nick Guerrero, Managing Partner of Vine Hill Winery finds himself. Nick and his team have embarked on a journey that continues a long tradition of winemaking in the historic Vine Hill Wine District. Established in 1867 by George and John Jarvis the wine district housed the Santa Cruz Mountain Wine Company of which John Jarvis was the president until his death in 1892. Jarvis also founded Union Vineyard in 1877. It is this historic site that is today's Vine Hill Winery.

Nick sees himself as the team's "coach." He lets each individual create their own template for success and is always there to lend a guiding hand as needed. "Putting other's first" was not always Nick's mantra, but as he has evolved, so has his opinion on managing people. He believes that the winery environment engenders an individual's reach for excellence and the ability to collaborate for the common good. Nick understands that this opportunity cannot always be seized in larger, corporate environments, or on the manufacturing room floor. That is why he feels extremely lucky to be surrounded by such outstanding individuals in an environment where their greatest success is celebrating great winemaking and all the efforts that support this goal.
