About Mastroberardino:

Mastroberardino is Campania's most renowned winery, established in the 1750s by winemaker Pietro di Mastro Berardino. Pietro was awarded the professional title of 'Mastro' as testament to his skills in quality winemaking, a tradition that has continued uninterrupted for ten generations and one that still continues today. ratings pedigree (past vintages):
2009 Wine Enthusiast rating: 90 points

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2010 Merlot shows its depth with a rich garnet color. Aromas of plum, peach compote, tobacco, rhubarb and anise fill the glass. Caramelized sugar and vanilla notes from oak aging complement the ripe fruit aromas. Mountain fruit characteristics show the intensity of the fruit flavors. The entry enjoys sweet berry notes of olallieberry, followed by a finish of blackberry preserves. The oak imparted flavors of mocha and toasted brioche, which pair with and complement the rich fruit layers. Refined tannins support this balanced wine. As this medium/heavy weight Merlot develops in the glass, one may enjoy ongoing juicy, dark berry notes, a touch of cocoa spice evolving in the middle and a lingering finish.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Avalon:

About Avalon:

Like the Indie films that inspired Avalon, our wines are original and uncut. We focus on the essence of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. We differentiate ourselves by producing flavorful wines at a decent price. We specialize in Cabernet Sauvignon and just recently branched out with our first release of Merlot from the 2009 vintage.

Avalon - AKA Paradise. According to Arthurian legend, the town of Glastonbury in the U.K. was once known as Avalon. Avalon has long been associated with paradise. It is a land of souls. Many believe that King Arthur's soul rests there and will some day rise again to defend England.

Our wines don't cost a king's ransom, but that's exactly what our Winemaker Alex Cose used to make. We joke with him and say, "Make us a wine that tastes like $75, and then let's sell it for about $15".

Additional wines from Mitolo:

About Mitolo:

In a short period of time Mitolo has become recognized as one of the finest producers in McLaren Vale. Mitolo is a family owned business, started by and led by the founder and owner Frank Mitolo's vision to create a range of wines of individuality, integrity and utmost quality. Whether it is in the vineyard, or in the winery, or the work of the different coopers who source and shape the diverse barrels which are used at Mitolo, each wine is nurtured and developed with a zealous passion that spares no effort to ensure that the best of everything is brought together to make wines of purity, elegance and power.

Italian family roots inspired Frank's early interest and enthusiasm for good food and great wine. With three earlier generations of his family working as agriculturists and entrepreneurs, it is not surprising that (while heading an international horticultural business), Frank found the energy and passion to pursue his dream of creating world-class wines. The business was established in 1999 and a year later the first Mitolo wine was launched. It was called G.A.M.; named after Frank’s three children and the next generation of Mitolo’s, Gemma, Alexander and Marco.

Acclaimed winemaker Ben Glaetzer is a partner in the business and the combination of his winemaking skills and Frank’s vision have led Mitolo to international recognition and acclaim. What started out as a dream is becoming an exciting reality, and Mitolo Wines has only just begun on its journey.

With a spicy red Burgundy soul but the muscle and punch of the rich, sunny south of France, "Dionysos" delivers on all fronts. Winemaker's Notes:

The name Meiomi, (pronounced May-oh-mee) was chosen as an expression of its source. The word means "coast" in the language of the native Wappo and Yuki tribes, and our wine draws its profile from the abundant choices presented along California's cool, lengthy Pacific border.

The 2009 vintage saw amazingly consistent weather in each of the locales with above average hang-time leading to balanced, concentrated fruit that was respectful of its source.

Bright, deep garnet color. Aromas of cola, blackberries and a sweet cedar note. A greatly layered palette abundant in flavor and texture. The first entry encases the mouth with a velvety richness. Then the wine unloads with flavors of bright cherry, cola, dried leaves undertoned with vanilla, leather and high style oak. The many layers emerge independently, then refocus while the supple tannins carry the wine through to a lingering, succulent finish.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Meiomi:
