My Notes:

About Chateau Hyot:

Chateau Hyot showcases the masterful skill of winemaker Amelie Aubert and consultant Michel Rolland. The wine is a Merlot-based blend, from 40 year-old vines, with Cabernet Franc bringing sophisticated aromas and silky tannins, and a dose of Cabernet Sauvignon for a structural backbone.

A deep respect for the vine is the driving force behind Amelie Aubert's philosophy and approach to making wine. "Quality is not possible with quantity," she explains, "and I want my wine to capture the essence of this fantastic terroir."

Winemaker's Notes:

Enticing aromas that are strikingly similar to Viognier, lightly floral with hints of peach pit, honeydew rind, white pear, and tangerine. On the palate, it has beautiful structure and acidity similar to Sauvignon Blanc along with beguiling fruit flavors that keep you coming back for another sip and plenty of body for a wine that shows such delicate aromas and flavors. Fruity, floral and yet still quite dry, this wine has to be tasted to be believed.

Best enjoyed in its youth either by itself, or as a wonderful partner with smoked meats, mild to medium-strong cheeses, and seafood (especially sushi!). Keep one in the fridge at all times.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Crios de Susana Balbo:

About Crios de Susana Balbo:

After 22 years of winemaking, Susana Balbo has a strong sense of what she wants from her wines. From every harvest, she creates the grandest possible wines under her Susana Balbo label. To achieve this, she makes a rigorous selection of the finest barrels prior to making her final blends, dividing them into the parents (reserve level wines) and offspring or "crios."

Wines under her Crios label display ripe fruit flavors, excellent balance and concentration, and are meant to be enjoyed in their vibrant youth. These wines are produced under Dominio del Plata's code of sustainable agriculture.

Like Susana's own crios (a boy and a girl), they are extremely lovable and fun to be around. The label features a series of three connected and overlapping hands, an image inspired by a Mayan artifact. The artifact illustrates the interconnectedness of every generation, and the irony that we will be both the parent and the offspring at different times in our lives.

Dense color with a red cherry hue. Aromas of plum, chocolate and cherry pie accentuated by hints of violet, clove, cinnamon spice and vanilla bean. Bright red fruit flavors of Bing cherry, strawberry and raspberry, contrasted by dark and compelling layers of blueberry, mocha and molasses. Great structure with smooth, fine tannins, a black pepper mid-palate and long nutmeg and red currant finish.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Paraduxx:

About Paraduxx:

Paraduxx is an uncommon blend of Zinfandel, California's resident grape, and the classic Bordeaux varietals of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Following in the tradition of "Super-Tuscan" wines of Italy, Paraduxx showcases the excellence of Napa Valley grapes in a unique way. Zinfandel has a history of success in Napa Valley's temperate climate and well-drained soils. We source our Zinfandel fruit from warmer growing regions with mature vines that produce concentrated, flavorful berries.

Paraduxx is an ideal wine to pair with a variety of foods, particularly, traditional Mediterranean-style fare of light pasta dishes and grilled meats. We use French and American oak cooperage for the Zinfandel to accentuate the fruitiness and to add a dimension of toast and vanilla. The Bordeaux varieties are aged in traditional French cooperage.

Paraduxx and Duckhorn Wine Company support conservation of the wetlands of the Pacific flyway.

Clean with a nice solid backbone completed by a racy acidity. Lots of cranberry flavors hint of strawberry. Balanced, tight, lean fruit, an ideal accompaniment to grilled fish and fowl or barbecued meats.

Additional wines from Schug Estate Winery:

About Schug Estate Winery:

Founded in 1980, Schug Carneros Estate Winery is the showcase and life-long dream of one of California's most celebrated winemakers. Walter Schug's reputation blossomed during his tenure as Founding Winemaker for Joseph Phelps Vineyards in the 1970s, where he made California’s first proprietary Bordeaux-Style blend (Insignia) and legendary vineyard designated Cabernets (Backus and Eisele Vineyards).

Drawing on his long experience in the production of fine wines in both Europe and California, Walter set up his own winery with his wife Gertrud in the cool, marine climate of the Carneros Appellation. Here he could focus on the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals that had always been close to his heart.

Schug Carneros Estate Winery combines old world understanding and tradition with modern winemaking techniques. By using only the finest grapes available, and maintaining the best winemaking values, these wines have gained acceptance worldwide as true contemporary classics.

89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot from 100% estate-owned Napa Valley vineyards.

The 2008 Insignia boasts aromatic layers of dark roasted coffee and graphite. The seductive mouth-feel has excellent length, intensely ripe black fruit, minerality and creaminess that tie together seamlessly on the palate.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Joseph Phelps Vineyards:

About Joseph Phelps Vineyards:

Joseph Phelps Vineyards is a family-owned winery committed to crafting world class, estate-grown wines. Founded in 1973 when Joe Phelps purchased a former cattle ranch near St. Helena in the Napa Valley, the winery now controls and farms nearly 375 acres of vines on eight estate vineyards in St. Helena, the Stags Leap District, Oakville, Rutherford, Oak Knoll District, Carneros and South Napa Valley. In 1999, the Phelps family added 100 acres of vineyard property near the town of Freestone on the Sonoma Coast, where Phelps now grows Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Phelps is best known for its flagship Napa Valley blend of red Bordeaux varietals, Insignia, first produced in 1974. Awarded Wine Spectator's "Wine of the Year" in 2005, Insignia is widely regarded as a qualitative benchmark for California winemaking.

Winemaker's Notes:

The fruit profile opens with fresh blackberries and black cherry, followed by ripe raspberry jam. More subtle aromas of currants, licorice, black pepper and spice. Entry on the palate is a burst of berries, followed by spices and ripe fruit sweetness. The mid-palate is smooth and round with elegant tannins and a lush finish. This Dry Creek offering shows that Zinfandel can be sophisticated and elegant and gains complexity with pairing. As such, excellent food pairings include roasted duck, veal, and grilled salmon as well as pastas and subtle-flavored cheeses.
