Winemaker's Notes:

The 2004 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a refined and complex wine that combines subtlety and depth. It has a dark ruby color with a deep red edge and displays aromas of fresh blackberries, violets, cola, nutmeg and licorice. In the mouth, the wine has a juicy attack and offers great expression of fruit and spice on the mid-palate. Its fruit-driven finish is long and elegant. Properly cellared, this wine should give drinking pleasure through 2023.

Our 2004 Alexander Valley, a blend of wine from several different vineyards, is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. We blended the vineyard lots in early 2005 and transferred the wine to 50% new and 50% once-used American oak barrels for aging. Blending prior to barreling allows us to achieve a balance of the wine's natural elements, such as fruit and tannin, before they are influenced by oak. The wine was then aged in barrel forapproximately 25 months and another 15 months in bottle to harmonize its components before release.

About Silver Oak Alexander Valley:

Great wine is meant to be savored with family and friends. This belief is at the heart of Silver Oak Cellars, where we have crafted extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignon for over 35 years. Designed to be deliciously drinkable from the day it is released, Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon grows more supple and luxurious over time.

Silver Oak's Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is produced at our picturesque Geyserville estate, set amid the rolling hills of northern Sonoma County.

The Tudor-style estate features a massive flagstone arch that leads to a central courtyard with a fountain. High, arched glass doors open on the tasting room with its rustic stone fireplace. Designed to resemble the American oak barrels that are a signature of Silver Oak, the oak tasting bar is accented with steel barrel hoops. Beautifully etched glass doors highlight the stone-lined wine library next door, which contains an enormous oak barrel carved with the Silver Oak logo.

Winemaker's Notes:

Cabernet Sauvignon is a grape that takes its own sweet time, slowly lingering to ripen on the vine. We are rewarded by its reluctance. Unabashed cherry and rich plums get your attention, while touches of drying tobacco leaves evoke a memory you can't quite pin down. Nutmeg, clove and touches of cedar shavings are left behind by fourteen months in American oak. The sturdy body of this wine is softened by chalky tannins that allow for a finish rich and round. Enjoy now, or cellar for another 5-6 years.

This well-balanced red wine can be enjoyed with a variety of meat dishes, rich sauces or aged cheeses.

About Bogle Vineyards:

Although the Bogle family has been farming since the 1800's, it wasn't until 1968 that the father and son team of Warren and Chris Bogle planted their first 20 acres of wine grapes in Clarksburg, California. Clarksburg is a small farming community nestled in the Sacramento Delta. Today Bogle Vineyards farms over 1,000 acres of wine grapes in the Delta region. While the winery was established ten years after the first grapes were planted, it has grown tremendously along with the vineyards. Bogle Winery is currently producing 100,000 cases of wine. Winemaker Christopher Smith joined the winery in 1992. He sources fruit from some of the best vineyards throughout the State of California and blends that fruit with the best grapes from our Estate Vineyards in Clarksburg.

Winemaker's Notes:

Cupcake vineyard works hard to craft the richest, smoothest and elegantly-textured wines. This full-bodied cabernet sauvignon shows soft tannins, with primary fruit flavors of blackberry, dark cherry and cassis. These levels of dark fruits melt with the tastes of cocoa and toasty oak and ends with a long, smooth and silky finish. Serve with venison glazed with a Cabernet Sauvignon sauce or baked brie drizzled with honey.

About Cupcake Vineyards:

At Cupcake Vineyards, our goal is to craft the richest, smoothest and most elegantly textured wines. To ensure this, we select our grapes from vineyards that are truly expressive of the varietals that we grow. Our Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot come from California’s sun-drenched Central Coast, where the distinctive topography and climate moderated by the Pacific Ocean yields some of California's best world-class wines. Our Sauvignon Blanc comes from the Marlborough valley of New Zealand, where the long days and cool climate allow the grapes to mature slowly over a longer period of time.

Winemaker's Notes:

Our 2007 Sterling SVR Reserve is a compelling combination of intense, dark character and gracious, inviting approachability. Heady, complex aromas reveal layers of cherry-almond, black plum and licorice, with subtle oak spices. The intricate blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc lends breadth to the palate, with fleshy fruit up front developing into bittersweet chocolate, espresso and toast notes toward the back. Dense, chewy tannins melt across the finish, followed by persistent fruit that lingers well after the wine has departed. A fine balance of rich flavors and bright acidity, this wine is a perfect fit for an elegant meal of roast lamb or braised short ribs.

About the Vineyards
Vineyards Our SVR is an expression of our winemaking style. We evaluate the characteristics of several varietals from different vineyards to create our ultimate reserve red wine. For 2007, we found the ideal balance of mountain, bench and valley fruit in grapes primarily from Diamond Mountain (33 percent), Yountville (33 percent) and Rutherford (16 percent). Each of these distinct regions contributes a unique profile, building intricate layers and complex character in this special reserve wine.

Winemaking
Each year, we evaluate grapes from our finest vineyards to craft a reserve blend that has a dense, dark fruit core and supple, chocolaty tannins. We want a wine that is complex and ageworthy, but accessible enough to enjoy right away. In 2007, our Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up 66 percent of the blend, showed fleshy, well-balanced fruit, which was perfectly complemented by the excellent structure and well-built tannins of our Merlot from up the valley. The remainder is Cabernet Franc, which so impressed us with its effusive aromas, rich texture and lovely chocolate-cherry and violet notes that we used it for 7 percent of the blend.

Vintage
The 2007 vintage was textbook perfect, with a long, even growing season and good warmth for small, concentrated grapes with vibrant flavors. Lower-than-average winter rainfall and a warm spring resulted in early budbreak, which was followed by moderate temperatures throughout the growing season. The cool conditions and long hangtime encouraged full phenolic ripeness and intense flavors in our grapes.

Additional wines from Sterling Vineyards:

About Sterling Vineyards:

Sterling Vineyards was born in the 1960s, a time when creativity and entrepreneurial spirit abounded, especially in California. In 1964, Peter Newton, once a paper broker in England, purchased 70 acres of land in Calistoga and became a Napa Valley winemaker. He planted grapes others did not, bottled varietals others did not, and built a dramatic winery with an aerial tramway. His innovations put Sterling Vineyards into the public eye and helped establish the Napa Valley as a premier travel destination.

When Newton began planting his estate, Cabernet Sauvignon was the preferred variety. He planted the esteemed Cabernet, but his decision to also plant Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot was a bold move. His Merlot vines were the first significant planting of that variety in the Napa Valley. Newton saw potential in the soft, velvety Merlot fruit, and in 1969 he took a chance by releasing California's first vintage-dated Merlot. This decision flew in the face of traditional standards, which held that Merlot was merely a blending grape, and forever changed the perception of red wine. People started to enter a restaurant and ask for a glass of Merlot!

Winemaker's Notes:

The fruit-laden 2007 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon offers a luscious bouquet of dark fruit including blackcurrant, black cherry, and blackberry layered over aromas of sweet vanilla and baking spices. Approachable cherry and cocoa notes lead to a wine of intense concentration, with flavors of dried plums and cola laced with hints of tobacco. Generous weight and mouth-filling velvet tannins frame a finish that lingers with flavors of dark cherry and cassis.

Additional wines from Franciscan Oakville Estate:

About Franciscan Oakville Estate:

Franciscan is one of Napa Valley's most venerable wineries, reaching back more than three decades. Franciscan wines take their signature style - rich, vibrant flavors framed by supple tannins - from the ideal climate offered by Napa Valley's cool, southern half and from the time-honored tradition of small-lot winemaking, blending from hundreds of barrels to craft fine wines that fully express the classic Bordeaux varieties.

Franciscan was founded in 1972 by a group of lawyers and doctors from San Francisco who decided to try turning their passion for wine into a business. In 1985, Agustin Huneeus, a Chilean exile who had built Concha y Toro in his native country, took over the helm at Franciscan. Huneeus refocused the winery on using the superlative grapes growing in its own vineyards, rather than sourcing from outside.

Today, Franciscan's wines are crafted under the exacting eye of Janet Myers, who came to Franciscan in August 2003 as associate winemaker after working in the Margaret River region and Beaulieu Vineyard, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars and Louis Martini. The winery remains committed to its tradition of small-lot winemaking, with small batches averaging just 150 to 1,500 cases. The image of a hand-operated wine press on Franciscan's logo and wine labels reflects this small lot approach to winemaking.
