Winemaker's Notes:

#21 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2011

A deep crimson color. The nose initially offers floral aromas (violets), which then open out on to fruity aromas (blackcurrant, raspberries, wild peach). On the palate, this Morgon reveals remarkable substance and a delightful fleshiness, while the fruity aromas are confirmed. This Morgon 2009 Domaine Jean Descombes has great finesse, distinction and elegance. Good persistence. A wine poised for a great future.

This wine pairs well with lamb, turkey and venison.

Additional wines from Georges Duboeuf:

About Georges Duboeuf:

For over 40 years Georges Duboeuf has been the Beaujolais region's most renowned négociant and is today regarded in the wine world as the "King of Beaujolais." Born in 1933 in Pouilly-Fuissé, the son of a winegrower, Georges began selling his family's wines from the back of his bicycle to now-legendary local chefs such as Paul Bocuse and Paul Blanc. In 1964, Georges realized his dream and founded his own company: Les Vins Georges Duboeuf.

Over the years, Georges has developed long-standing relationships with the region's top growers and winemakers. Georges is involved in every aspect of his enterprise and is known for his passion and his legendary palate. In 2003, the Duboeuf family opened a new, modern winery in Romanéche-Thorins. The following year, the Duboeuf and Deutsch families jointly purchased Château des Capitans in Juliénas. With annual sales of 30 million bottles, Georges Duboeuf is one of the world's best-known French brands.

Winemaker's Notes:

60% Merlot with the balance Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

The vines are on the plains, between Bolgheri and the town of La California. Temperature-controlled fermentation, manual punch-down and pumpovers. Aged one year in barrique and a minimum of six months in bottle. The wine has a warm, deep purplish-red color and aromas of Mediterranean wood. Its flavors of wild berries and juicy ripe cherries are balanced by spice notes, and an elegant structure and mellow mouthfeel.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Aia Vecchia:

About Aia Vecchia:

Aia Vecchia is the name of an old building which is today the centre of a company deep in the Tuscany countryside between Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci. This is an area where the particularly favorable microclimate and ideally suited soils make possible the production of very high quality wines. The particular position gives the vines very much light, both direct sunlight as sunlight reflected by the sea. This in general allows an early harvest.

The property consists of 69 hectars of open ground: 48 are vineyards, 30 of which are under the Bolgheri DOC. The planted varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, which are used to produce Lagone and Sor Ugo. In the cellar situated in Castagneto Carducci there are 2000 barriques.

The Morellino di Scansano is produced in the estate of Magliano in Toscana (Grosseto) which consists of 10 hectares planted with Sangiovese and Merlot grape varieties.

Winemaker's Notes:

Elderflower, lilac, violet, and rose are the floral notes attributed to these wines along with the aforementioned smoky minerality.

These Ockfener Bockstein are the most refined and playful of St. Urbans-Hof's wines.

My Notes:

About St. Urbans-Hof:

For our family, wine has been at the heart of life for generations. Our deep respect for the traditions of our region remains, as ever, the guarantee for the quality of our wines.

In our endeavours we give highest priority to maintaining the egological balance of our vineyards, in the belief that as winemakers we must recognize and respect the fragile unity of viticulture and nature.

St. Urbans-Hof employs traditional methods of wine growing and winemaking which have been used in the Mosel and Saar Valleys for centuries, some of which date back to the Romans. For example, the vines are grown on the traditional single-post 'Heart-binding' trellis system, whereby the canes are tied in the shape of a heart.

Also, organic fertilizers are utilized in order to maintain the natural balance of the soil. Most importantly, yields are kept at low levels in order to achieve intense and well-structured wines. For optimal flavour development, leaves are thinned and grapes are harvested as late as possible to allow for maximum ripening. All grapes are hand picked and carried from the vineyard in traditional shoulder-mounted containers called 'hotten' to ensure optimal fruit quality.

Just as important as the great length taken to deliver the best possible fruit from the vineyard is the careful attention given to the proper traetment of the grapes by cellarmaster Rudolf Hoffmann. The grapes are lightly crushed, after which they remain on the skins for a short period to ensure the complete release of aromas into the juice.

After this, the pulp of skins and juice is gently pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks at cool cellar temperatures to fully capture the aromas, flavours and delicate natural spritz of the Riesling grape. The wines are then transferred into traditional 1000 litre 'Fuder' barrels for several months to harmonize, after which they are lightly filtered and bottled.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2009 vintage in Chablis continued the string of excellent vintages in the region, with a hot, dry summmer perfectly ripening the fruit for harvest. The 2009 Chablis AC is a classically styled Chablis; medium in body, ripe with mineral, bright fruit, salty "sea-air" saline and firm acidity on the finish.

The versatile, affordable, village Chablis from Domaine Christian Moreau Pere et Fils is bright and crisp, with the classic, taut structure and refreshing minerality that define traditional Chablis. This is a Moreau classic.

My Notes:

About Christian Moreau:

Christian Moreau, one of the leading figures in Chablis, is producing the wines he loves under his own name. Free of any personal involvement with the negociant company that his family founded and sold, with his son Fabien they founded Domaine Christian Moreau Pére et Fils in 2001 and set up their winemaking operation in the very heart of the Chablis country, at the foot of its famous Grands Cru vineyards.

The Domaine holdings are located in the best oriented parcels, and bottlings include Grand Crus Les Clos, Valmur, Vaudésir, Blanchot, and Les Clos des Hospices (a Monopole from the Moreau family), Premier Cru Vaillon, as well as Chablis AC, and some Petit Chablis. Every parcel is harvested by hand to bring out the very best from each vineyard. The Moreau's winemaking philosophy is non-interventionist at its core, entailing biodynamic practices aimed toward creating low-yield, high-quality harvests. Additionally, grapes for every wine from the Chablis AC to the Les Clos Grand Cru are hand-picked.

Fabien Moreau became the winemaker with the 2002 vintage, and is already producing remarkable results. With previous experience in New Zealand, Fabien is a visionary young winemaker who is a sincere adherent to the tenants of terroir. As such, the wines of Christian Moreau Pere et Fils are remarkable for their authenticity, distinctiveness, and exquisite quality.

Additional wines from La Maialina:

About La Maialina:

La Maialina celebrates the history, culture and cuisine of Chianti, prized since antiquity for its rich soil and favorable climate. Rolling hillsides lend themselves to the optimal cultivation of the Sangiovese grape, ripening to perfection during the dry, warm summers. The La Maialina wines express the essence of Tuscany and the tradition of quality that defines this historic region. The name La Maialina (little pig) references the Cinta Senese heirloom breed that originated in the Siena area during the 1300’s and is the only Tuscan native pig to survive extinction. Produced by the revered Attilio Pagli, La Maialina Chianti, Chianti Classico, and Chianti Classico Riserva are crafted to express the essence of the territory and tradition of quality of this historic region. Settled first by Etruscan then the Romans, the earliest documentation of a “Chianti wine” dates back to the 13th century when viticulture was known to flourish in the “Chianti Mountains” around Florence. The Chianti denomination was first delimited in 1932 by ministerial decree and its boundaries have remained unchanged.

Winemaker's Notes:

Lagone has a warm deep red color close to purple. Delicate aromas of Mediterranean wood and vanilla emphasize the structured and elegant taste with intense notes of wild berries, ripe juicy sour cherries and hints of sweet spices that leave the palate satisfied and pleasantly sweet and dry. Tibor Gál has been able to create a blend marked by the Italian "terroir" together with the "finesse" of a great French red wine. The wine is well structured with a strong and mellow texture. In short, a modern red wine of the best quality.

Winemaker's Notes:

Greenish straw in color, our Chardonnay is concentrated with ripe stone fruit aromas and flavors, with an underlying subtle toasty oak complexity. Very ripe peach with ripe banana is interlaced with vanilla, lime-aide, clove, nutmeg and pineapple upside down cake. This wine has great viscosity, depth and a crisp long fruitful finish. The flavors in the palate are predominantly citrus, like orange, mandarin and sweet grapefruit with a honey suckle nuance. The 2009 Chardonnay is a pleasant experience, inviting from start to finish...enjoy.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Freemark Abbey:

About Freemark Abbey:

The history of Freemark Abbey began in 1886, when Josephine Marlin Tychson became the first woman to build and operate a winery in California. The historic site where Josephine's winery, Tychson Cellars, once stood is now known as Freemark Abbey.

Josephine, a native of San Lorenzo, California and her husband, John Tychson, a Danish immigrant, moved to St. Helena in 1881. For $8,500, they purchased 147 acres north of St. Helena, which later became known as "Tychson Hill".

Shortly after her husband's untimely death, Josephine began construction of a fifty square foot redwood winery which would grow to hold a capacity of about 30,000 gallons. In addition, she hired Nils Larsen, an experienced vintner, as her foreman. Josephine successfully produced wine for the next eight years and then sold the winery to Larsen in 1894. In turn, Larsen leased the winery to Antonio Forni, a good friend of Josephine's. Forni later purchased the property in 1898. Forni is responsible for building a new winery on the old site of the Tychson structure.

In the years that followed, Freemark Abbey went through a period of several different owners until 1966, when a group of partners purchased the winery. In 1993, Winemaker Ted Edwards became a partner. Edwards assumed the role of managing partner in addition to maintaining the responsibilities he has held as winemaker since 1985.

Intense, ruby red color. Expressive nose with notes of raspberries, bilberries and cherries, enlivened by a touch of spice and a depth of vanilla. Charming fruit in the mouth with good structure that highlights concentrated flavors and fleshy tannins. Nice complexity on tasting resulting in good length. Thanks to a rigorous selection from our best "cuvees" for 2007 Crianza, this wine retains in full the character from top quailty grapes.

A perfect accopaniment to Mediterranean cuisine, fried food, grilled vegtables, pulses, pallea and other rice dishes, pasta fish in tomato sauce, ham, chorizo, pate, beef(roast stewed or grilled) and cheese(mild or medium matured).

Additional wines from Marques de Caceres:

About Marques de Caceres:

Founded in 1970, with its first release in 1975, Marqués de Cáceres the Rioja bodega was established by Henri Forner, whose family has been active in the wine business for generations. The winery is named for a Spanish peer who was also an investor in the winery and a friend of Henri Forner.

The Forner family fled Spain during the Spanish Civil War and settled in France. In the early 1960s, Henri Forner and his brother Elysée bought and restored two abandoned châteaux, Château Camensac and Château Larose-Trintaudon. These châteaux are now recognized as two of the finest properties in Bordeaux. When Henri decided to establish a bodega in his homeland, he selected what he considered the finest viticultural area in Spain: Cenicero in Rioja Alta.

Emile Peynaud, former professor and chief wine researcher at the University of Bordeaux, was initial consultant to the winery. Today, Michel Rolland is wine consultant at Marqués de Cáceres and Henri and his daughter, Christine, are at the helm. The vinification methods at Bodegas Marqués de Cáceres are similar to those used in Bordeaux. Thus, French winemaking techniques and expertise have been applied to native Spanish grapes to produce one of the finest modern Riojas.

Bodegas Carchelo dates from the early 1980s and pioneering efforts to modernize viticulture in what had been a backwater viticultural region. Founding partner Juan Sierva's nearly 700 acres of prime vineyards are widely distributed in the region, at widely varying altitudes and exposures. Varieties grown feature Monastrell (in France Mourvèdre, both ungrafted head-pruned and wire-trained vineyards) plus Syrah, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
