Hills and dense woods surround the romantic, medieval town of Montalcino. The soils, altitude and lush hillside topography make this region the cradle of both the Sangiovese grape and coveted wine Brunello di Montalcino. In 1994, the Gaja family purchased Pieve Santa Restituta in hopes of bringing their expertise and experience in winemaking to this famous appellation. Named for the parish church, or “pieve”, located on the estate, this was Angelo Gaja’s first venture outside the borders of his native Piedmont.
Wine has been produced on the property since the 12th century. Here, GAJA produces three world-renowned wines. Rennina is made from the Sangiovese of three vineyard sites on the property. Sugarille is a single-vineyard Brunello that takes its name from an area first recorded in the records of the church compiled in 1547. Brunello di Montalcino is the estate’s newest wine, produced from select vineyard sites throughout the estate.
