The estate of Conti Formentini is not only a producer of fine Collio varietal wines; the property boasts a magnificent castle, museum, restaurant and inn, all in the center of the hilltop town of San Floriano. Founded in 1530, Formentini is the oldest house in Collio, which most authorities see as one of Italy's finest wine growing districts. Located between the Judrio and Isonzo rivers very near the border with Slovenia, the Collio enjoys the protection of the Pre-Alps to the north and the moderating influence of the Adriatic Sea to the south. The climate is relatively cool, and the vines are planted in southeast facing slopes for optimum sun exposure. The distinctive soils, marl and sandstone, are interspersed with layers of fossil-rich flysch.
