Winemaker's Notes

Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre, the traditional mainstays of France's Rhone Valley, have been the backbone of d'Arenberg's vineyards since the 1880s. The whites from the same region are made from the trio of Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. In 1995, Doradillo vines at the bottom of d'Arenberg's "Last Ditch" vineyard were replaced with these varieties, the first of such in the McLaren Vale region.

The 2006 Last Ditch Viognier is both exotic and beautifully controlled. Mid-straw with green tints, the nose is dominated by ripe apricots alongside fragrant ginger, dried herb and spiced tropical fruits. The viscous palate shows apricot and white peach with herbaceous edges, minerality and soft layered lees characters. The highlight of this wine is its balance of ripe fruit, fresh acidity and gentle grip.

The perfumed grape creates wines of distinct aromas and flavors. Lower in acid and even lower yielding, Viognier kept to itself in Southern France until some traveling winemakers took hold of...
