Not a huge Zin lover, I needed some to round out my cellar. I was very impressed with the lighter than-usual notes of pepper and jam, it was actually quite smooth!
Whenever I see a '03 from Napa or Sonoma at a good price, I typically buy it. I loved the vintage and Rutherford Hill is usually a good middle-of-the-road bet. In this case, the winemaker says muscular and lean; I'll go with lean. It's a softer cab with a nice round finish and I'd buy it again but would reserve it for a weekday. I'm not going to impress anyone with it, but it's a good choice on most days!
A friend from Cleveland has been urging me to try this wine for a few years. In a buying splurge, I needed a few bottles to round out a case and remembered the suggestion. I tell you, there are not many Cab's that make me stop me in my tracks, but this one had me doing just that. I decided to behave myself and and stop at 2 glasses. A vacuum stopper and 2 days later, this wine was even better than the first taste! This is one of the best Cab's I have ever had under $20!!
