This smooth, super Tuscan wine (read chianti without the markup) goes great with chicken and pasta as the spicy bouquet and flavor and medium body are just robust and distinctive enough to be enjoyable and not overpowering. The winemakers switched the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes used from 2005, and this shows as it is much smoother on the palate.

Dark amethyst in color with an herbal aroma, the Domaine Laroque 2007 is a smooth, velvety (but dry) red with a spicy finish that is easy to drink. It went well with some soft, savory cheeses.

A tart, piquant, and Sahara-dry red with a peppery finish, it's a Malbec with fruity and floral aromas and medium body and bold, sweet flavors (though not as strong as Zinfandel). It's great with pork chops and some hard cheeses, and will only improve with age, mellowing out some.

Dark red and purplish in hue, the Hogue Genesis 2006 has fruity aroma and flavor (red berries) and a spicy finish. The wine lacks sufficient body and tastes a bit watery. While it's drinkable, there are definitely bottles that are just as good at lower cost.

A friendly pinot noir with fruity notes, it has round, cherry and cranberry flavors with a slight, peppery finish that doesn't last long. It went fine with my sauteed chicken.

Spicy aroma of plum and chocolate with raspberry filling, this medium-bodied, dark purple Shiraz is smooth and easy to drink with a pomegranate flavor and peppery finish. The wine is relatively dry and goes well with a sharp, hard cheese with fig jam.

This garnet-hued chianti has a fruity aroma and flavors of cranberry and pomegranate with a hint of tobacco. It's soft on the palate with a spicy finish but lacks the stout body of a good chianti.

Deep purple in color, the Amalaya is half Malbec and quarter Cabernet Sauvignon, making it a medium-bodied and dry red. With a fruity and slightly spicy aroma, it is smooth and very drinkable with mild acidity and earthiness. It's still good the next day given a vacuum seal.
