Castello Monaci Primitivo Piluna 2008
(this vintage is sold out)
Price: $15.99
Style: Smooth & Supple
This was a very nice, full bodied, well-balanced, smooth red that was fabulous with my dry-aged ribeye. Flavors were as described plus some cherry, esp in the long finish. Good value. 90 pts.

Pair with: Beef > Mushroom
This was wonderful, full-bodied, well-balanced red with smoky chocolate flavors coming to the fore. It paired exquisitely with a beef tenderloin I found on special, for which I whipped up a red wine pan sauce with mushrooms (using a less noble red for the sauce, btw). At $13, one better grab it before it's gone.

Style: Light & Crisp
Pair with: White Fish
This is a very nice SB, but has only a hint of the mineral background common to this varietal in New Zealand. Letting it warm up a tad brings out a fuller taste profile of which lemon and apple are the most prevalent (for once, I agree with the reviewer). After paying $12 at Wine.com, I found it at my local grocer (H.E.B.) for $10. I bought 6 to qualify for an additional 10% discount - an absolute steal at $9.

Oh la la, this was a marvelous selection. It was rich, smooth, and perfectly balanced. One white wine devotee in the group said they would happily drink reds if they always tasted this good. I paired it with a rich Mediterranean chicken dish with tomatoes, capers and olives and topped with Feta cheese. This rich dish would have held up against a spicier red, but we were all tres contents all the same. I'll be buying more.

This was a very nice Montepulciano, that opened up nicely with some air. Was fab with my Italian sausage-stuffed pork roast. Will definitely buy again.

Well balanced, full bodied Chard., where butterscotch seemed to dominate. I enjoyed it quite a bit, despite it being ever-so-slightly sweet.

Though this wine had good balance and a nice long finish, it lacked a critical component: good flavor. There was some tartness, maybe a hint of pineapple, but an almost salty mud extract comes through in the end. 85 pts.

You gotta love the above professional reviewer's panache: "...understated, fat-free personality". In other words, 'not very rich'. That's how I'd describe this smooth, but light and one-dimensional pinot. It's not unpleasant, but is way over-priced at the current offering of $24.99.
