Volker Eisele Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

Opens up with an opulent nose of crushed blackberries, currants and ample oak tones. Med deep purple/garent color with some transpancy at the rim. Decent flavors but a very coarse texture that simply doesn't improve with time in the glass and finsihes unbalanced and little hot. Not my type of Napa cab! I'm beginning not to trust WE ratings. Maybe an 85 rating would be more in line with my senses.

Beaulieu Vineyard Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
Item No. 110118
A solid wine with a wonderful nose and deep color. Mouthfeel is beautiful with good extraction and outstanding fruit. Great wine for the price and much better than the WS rating might indicate. Cellared away a few to watch develop over time. The wine carries good Rutherford fruit, smooth texture with enough extraction to develop boldness and borderline big wine.

Chateau Ste. Michelle Indian Wells Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

This was a positive encounter that renewed my faith in CSM cabernets. This wine has a big nose with fruit and deep color. The wine is smooth and supple with excellent fruit, subtle oak structure and some vanillan complexities. Very nice for a young wine and a very good value.

Chateau Ste. Michelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Disappointed with the the promise of a 93 rating wine. A clean monodimensional wine with no overpowering flaws, however, it has nothing special going for it either. The nose is tight and unrevealing (even on the second day). Some black fruit on the palate but the wine struggles to find any sort of balance. There is some oak, but it is not rendered as vanilla or cedar notes... just oaky tannins. It goes down the gullet without leaving any positive distinctions or positive impression. The wine is young and perhaps the components have yet to meld into a cohesive wine. I'd have a hard time rating this above 86.

Santa Rita Medalla Real Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

A fairly big and chewy cab. Good flavors, deep color. Npse of intense blackberry and stone fruit, including peaches and blueberries. Subtle nuances of toasted oak and brown spices. A good wine for the price and may improve with cellaring for a couple of years. While it tastes good, it struggles to find harmony on the palate. I thought the tannins were nice, my wife thougth it was too tannic and unbalanced with respect to mouthfeel. Shows good promise .

Feudi di San Gregorio Taurasi Riserva Piano di Montevergine 2001

10 years old and this wine is still transparent at the rim. Deep intense ruby color with no sign of bricking. Plum, oak, straw and toast on the nose. The wine is absolutely seamless in taste and texture. Tannins are fine and polished and balance perfectly with the fruit and acid. Long finish.

A wonderful chard made in the Burgundian style. Absolutely smooth and creamy in texture with balanced acidity and balanced oak. Nose hints of jasmine, citrus topical fruit and lush vanilla. Balanced citrusy components and vanilla oak in an absolutely silky finish.

This is a big opulent chard. Barrel fermented without going over the top. It is well balanced with vanillan from the oak and pure chard flavors typical of the Carneros region. To my tastes a superb wine capable of cellaring for several more years.

Domus Aurea Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

This is a well made wine. Slightly tight on the nose and somewhat austere on the palate at first. Opens up with time to reveal characteristics of a well made and polished cab. That said, I found the wine somewhat lacking in body and length. Perhaps more cellar time would allow the wine to develop more depth. Not enough umph to justify the 50.00 plus per bottle.

Kendall-Jackson Grand Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

Sorry about the multiple entries for this wine. On the wine itself. This wine was a pleasant find. It opens well on the nose, with deep cassis and spice and a hint of mocha. The body has sumptuous dark fruit and is nicely wrapped in smooth grape skin tannins and subtle balanced oak tannins. The mouthfeel is plushly structured and smooth with a lingering finish. Not quite a reserve Cakebread, but equally enjoyable and an absolute steal for the price.
