Unless seriously discussing potential sulfur issues, no one suggesting a wine is compromised by its screwcap ought to be drinking anything above $10. Period. Pair With: Someone capable of gauging the quality of a wine by what's in the bottle and not solely its enclosure.

Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cepages 2009
    Sold Out $59.99
    2010 vintage available for $59.99
    Style: Rich & Creamy
This exudes an old-style, bakery-made cherry/redcurrant pie note that transitions into an extracted, glazed black raspberry donut profile in the mouth. Bits of mahogany, maple, and sandalwood trickle in to bring this "grandma's kitchen" feel into full focus. Despite all this, though, it's not overtly or recklessly candied (if wine could be a stereotypical "comfort food", this would be a good example). Rich and pretty. 92+.

Fantastic nose of black olive and a burnt balsamic reduction with prunes, charred black cherries, and hints of celery, graphite, and asparagus. Palate transitions into a fruitier wave of smoky cherry & black raspberry pie with touches of red salsa and subtle notes of baking spices. The palate is a touch candy-er and more jammy than the sensational 2007...but even though it's a bit less my taste because of it, that result probably makes it appealing to more drinkers. The '07 is still the better vintage, in my view, but this is pretty rock solid and wonderfully balanced. 92+.

    Veramonte Red Blend 2012
    $10.99
Nose starts off in classic Chilean fashion: dark fruit, spice box, and earthy forest wood. It quickly and completely devolves into melted-down dark jolly rancher juice on the palate, however. I was quite impressed with Veramonte's El Caballero cab sauv and had moderate hopes for this wine (since both come in at similar price points), but this really just seems as if it was made to cater to pure sugar-fiends. If I could, I might go 1.5 stars based solely on the solid nose, but this effort deserves more of a round-down than a round-up. 72.

Ladera Sagrada A Portela Mencia 2011
    Sold Out $18.99
    2012 vintage available for $15.99
    Style: Big & Bold
This is a hearty, rich, extracted wine that won't likely win over non -brett fans. Nose of black and blue jammed fruit with soil-drenched dark sawdust. Comes off a bit hotter than the 13.5% would suggest, but provides ample acidity in its dusty blackberry pie palate. Subtle tannins follow through to a burnt cocoa powder finish. Solid and intriguing. 90.

    2008 vintage available for $29.99

It's near impossible to find a stockier, more potent wine anywhere near this price range. Pine forest aromas mix with dark black cherry, blackberry, clove, cinnamon, and cedar cigar box on the nose, all of which echo into the palate tied to massive, beckoning tannins. One of my favorites already, yet it still has the structure and youth to age plenty more. 94.

    Gerard Bertrand Corbieres 2010
    Sold Out $7.99
    2011 vintage available for $13.99
Incredibly well-balanced Rhone blend, with fresh-squeezed red fruit and mossy, dewy earth on the nose, echoed into the palate with pretty, fine tannins mixed with a vibrant acidity. Touches of black red fruit in the medium-plus mouthfeel mirror the Syrah/Mourvedre aided color. A very nice touch of dusted walnuts zips into the mid-palate, before the smooth tannins and zippy acidity tango towards a great finish. A fantastic, underrated surprise. 92.
