This wine was difficult for me to rate, as the intensity of flavor was so unexpected. If I had tasted this blindly, I would have thought it was an expensive Sonoma Zinfandel... Dark chocolate, espresso and overripe blue/black fruit are intense with an almost overly smoky/oaky nose. I do enjoy this wine but it truly does not taste like it is in the Grenache/Garnacha family. I had it with some cinnamon sugar toast and a piece of chocolate. It would definitely overpower a white meat of any sort. I would like to try it with a mole or curry though! The only component that does not remind me of a Zinfandel is the fact I noticed the legs were not as defined. Definitely worth trying at this price!

This Rhone blend seems young, slightly too tart, and a bit bland. I think there are much nicer examples of this blend available. There was a reasonable smoothness to the finish, but not much berry depth or complexity.

Wonderful to have with middle eastern/Mediterranean foods. Can stand up to heat as it has a bit of its own, and the smoothness combined with aromatic black tea and anise adds to that flavor profile (seasoned, spicy) in particular. Great to share with any elegant meal, really, and not so rich that it overwhelms the palate. Lovely! I will be buying more!

I had the opportunity of having a glass of this wine after a table I was waiting on left 1/4 of the bottle on the table "you should try some dear. on us" ...An elegant older couple ordered it, and I was astonished at the time thinking, why would they spend that much on a bottle of wine when they were sharing a New York strip steak? I had never gotten to taste it, as the place I was working back then only opened the cheaper bottles for the employee tastings. Wow. That was all I could say, or think, after trying the wine. Ok. That couple had their priorities set just right! This wine seemed so rich and delicious that I thought for the first time that there really was something to be said about an expensive bottle of wine. I started writing a wine journal after that experience! The silky, luscious mouthfeel was what I noticed most. Before that, wine was "good" or "not good" to me. I thought, cinnamon, cardamom, boysenberry, cigar smoke....This wine was like an everlasting gobstobber. But... Elegant.

This wine is as beautiful and as juicy as a pomegranate seed. A few herbal nuances keep it from remaining completely fruity, and add a depth to the lighter body. The tartness mellows out after aeration and the bing cherry/raspberry notes are incredible. I really wish I could find it on this website!

    Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc 2012

This is an excellent example of the varietal as developed in New Zealand. Racy, ripe tropical fruit balanced by the tang of bright citrus. I have recently gone back to liking a more subtle style, but a few years ago this wine was pretty exciting to try. If you are not familiar with the New Zealand style this is a good place to start. I have never tried decanting it, maybe that would enhance some subtleties that I missed.

My favorite from this winemaker. Carmelized red fruit, rich as a mixed berry pie, festive and delicious! Earthy and dark molasses finish. We splurged last year and bought a few bottles for Christmas, and it perfectly accentuated the celebratory mood of our first year as a married couple. Hints of smoke add mystery to the bouquet.

I agree with the winemaker's notes, especially about the flavor and nose of kiwi and grapefruit. I have to say I did not taste the sweeter, more "ripe" notes of melon as suggested. The aromas seem more complex than the flavors, which I found interesting, even if a bit disappointing. A pleasant, fragrant example of the varietal.

Aveleda Quinta de Aveleda Vinho Verde 2012
    Sold Out
    $8.99
    Style: Light & Crisp
This wine has a fizz that reminds me of pop rocks. I have enjoyed other Vinho verdes more, as I do find this one lacks the minerality that I prefer. It may be that the effervescence masks some of the depth of flavor. Anyways, still a nice wine with traditional yellow-green fruit and crisp finish.
