Overrated indeed! This wine is boring on the palate. You don't feel it on the midpalate. It is bitter. On the nose you get good things though, spics, black fruits, blackberry. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because of the sniff and the color. It is purple like good Malbec, but that doesn't live up to the way it tastes!

    Franciscan Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

    2012 vintage available for $22.99

2007 is one of the best vintages of Napa. This wine is clearly has some potential. However, it is not time yet to drink it. This is one of the wines that you would lay down for 4 to 7 years from now. It is still very tight and is not offering its atmosphere yet. It has a nice good color. On the nose, black fruits are dominating. Blueberry, blackberry, cassis, and dark chocolate. Also there is a little hint of licorice. On the palate, very dry, big, bold, very tannic, a bit bitter finish, a lot of dark chocolate going on, balanced. It is still tight and has not a lot of things to offer right now! This is no way a 94 bottle of wine. Yes, this wine will evolve in the next 4 to 7 years, but I just cannot see how this wine has been given such a very high score! By the way, people will be either 1 or 0 on this wine. It is either you like it or not, nothing will be in between. I am 87 on this effort.

Actually 2.75 stars. First of all, the 2007 vintage of Napa valley is regarded as one of the best of all time. This wine has a good and clean color. On the nose, this wine has, somehow, a lot of things to offer. A lot of black fruits, cassis, blackberry, a hint of licorice, very fruit-forward, and A LOT of oak! On the midpalate, there is a lot of heat and oakyness going on and it is almost the only thing you feel at this stage. Finish, it is long, very tannic, harsh, and not really pleasant (because of the oakyness). There are also some black fruits shyly dancing on my palate. Overall, this wine has a good nose, a little bit below average midpalate, and unpleasant finish. Because of the amount of oakyness and heat this wine has, I think this wine is a little bit (just a little bit) disjointed and unbalanced. I feel the oakyness and heat are at one place and all the fruity flavors are at another place. Also, this wine shows that it has some potential. Clearly it will evolve during the next 9 to 16 years. However, I totally disagree with Robert Parker (a wine critic that I like the most). I am 87 on this effort. Happy drinking!

This is a very good bottle of wine. It is very fruit forward and classic california cab. On the nose, I am getting black fruits, plum, blackberry, black licorice. It has a ripe nose. Midpalate, there are many layers of ripe fruits going on. Finish, this wine has firm, silky, and sexy tannins. It lingers in your mouth. It is well made and balanced. Full bodied and lush indeed. Bottled at 15.2%! Even though this wine will clearly evolve in the next 10 to 12 years, it will surprise you with its youth. I would agree with WS on 93 pts. Happy drinking!

Actually, 3.75 stars. This is indeed one of the best Merlots I have had in this price range. However, Pahlmeyer Merlot 2004 is very fruit-forward, so if you are an old-world wine drinker, you might not find it very special. On the nose, the first thing that hits me is very ripe black fruits, plum, a hint of mild spices, a little hint of vanilla. Smooth tannins, medium-bodied. On the midpalate, you get licorice, ripe black fruits. This wine impresses me quite a bit, given the fact you pay $70. I would buy it again and would recommend it to a friend. One last very important thing, do not be a shallow person and say I do not drink Merlot because of Sideways. This is very insane. I know you are not a shallow person! Happy drinking! I am 91 on this effort. RP is 90.
