Fortunato Amontillado

Biography:
I love wine in all it's forms and guises (except Merlot). I would rather eat sushi in Tijuana before I drink a Merlot. :-) I think someone who drinks white zin, while tasty, simply says "I dont know anything about wine." Which is ok...I will be more than happy to share what I have learned. Its always fun getting someone new into the wine game. I think New York whites are largely overlooked and vastly underrated. I look forward to the day when New York wine makers have the break through that Napa Valley had back in the 70's. Although, I think New York reds are kinda bad...sorry guys. I think French wine is largely overrated...good but overrated. I think the Italians up there in Piedmonte got their sh*t together in a big way. West Coast Pinot's are gifts from the gods themselves. Australia...YEAH MATE! Feel free to leave a comment if you've tried any of the wines on my lists. I'd love to know what others think about them. If anything Ive said about the wines I have reviewed gets you to try a wine, let me know if you like it or not. Thats about it.

What I like about wine:

Galileo once said "wine is sunlight held together by water." That is so true. Every bottle is a surprise.

For such a young vintage, this is an exceptional Barbaresco. The presentation was typical of this varietal with colors of rose and garnet. The nose was rich and well balanced with hints of licorice and mild earth. The pallet was very well balanced with notes of black cherries, mild spices, earthy florals. Its finish was long and smooth devoid of any bitterness that often accompanies young wines made from the nebbiolo grape. I would suggest a case or two for the cellar as this vintage will be superb when it reaches it's peak. I think the 94 point rating was a little stingy for this exceptional offering. I would give it a solid 95 points and hoist it to level of collectable.

Nope. Not a fan. In all fairness, this was a decent wine. However, it simply did not live up to it's 93 point rating or the hefty price tag. I found the appearance of this barolo consistent with the varietal. The nose was sharp and hindered by the alcohol content. The pallet initially presented well however, the aggressive acidity took over without allowing the flavor to fully develop. Perhaps in a few years, this vintage will level off and attain good balance. However, for the price, I would suggest looking elsewhere if you are looking for something that will increase in value. I would give this offering 90 points.

Since the 1973 vintage won the 1976 Paris Blind Taste Test, I thought I would give this Chardonnay a try. I stopped half way through the bottle and used the rest with some butter to baste my scallops that I had going on the grille. Worked a lot better that way. It was most expensive seafood baste Ive ever had.
