Mike Hines

Biography:
I drink mostly reds from the Willamette valley in Oregon, the Columbia and Yakima regions in Washington, and the Anderson valley in California. My wife drinks mostly sparkling wines from the Anderson valley in CA. I am trying to get up to speed on more Italian wines, but keeping track of all the new wines in the regions I already follow is quite a bit of work! Washington wine makers are just starting to make some really good red wines. Check out the 2005 DeLille and Woodward Canyon wines. Simply fantastic wines in a good year for Washington!
What I like about wine:

I like big, round wines! Not much for thin or overly tanic wines. Not a big fan of anything with residual sugar over 3%! (Sorry late harvest Reisling fans...)

The appearance of this wine is very light, almost clear. Little depth in the color (1 of 2). The bouquet is light and has just the faintest flowery hint to it (2 of 4). This wine does have a very nice presentation however. It is very easy to drink, and a light slightly sweet (This is no Brut!) body with little depth gives the drinker nothing at which to take offense (5 of 10). Overall, this sparkling wine will have broad appeal as per the winemakers design, but it will not excite any experienced wine fans. (2 of 4). I'll keep a half case of this on hand for events to which I need to bring a mass-appeal sparkling wine. TOTAL: 10 of 20

This wine has a nice deep red color (2 of 2). The bouquet is pleasant and aproachable, promising medium full body and an enjoyable tasting experience (3 of 4). The taste is a touch dry on the way in, and a medium body keep this wine from playing with the big boys. A flinty, well balanced finish should stand up to fairly substantial meals (5 of 10). Overall, I may have enjoied this wine more had I taseted it with food. It certainly has the structure to avoid being overpowered by most food parings (2 of 4). Total Score: 12 of 20

Normally not a fan of anything rose, this sparkling wine from California sets itself apart from others in its price category. By keeping the skins on Pinot just long enough to give it some color, you also get more body and flavor making this a very interesting wine by itself or with food. Mike, Thanks for the tip on Navarro. I was just up in Anderson Valley. I have been to Navarro several times. Great place. We really enjoyed Esterlina Winery, way up on the mountain. Give it a go!! Geoff
