Yalumba
Founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, Yalumba is Australia's oldest family owned winery. Today, the winery is owned by 5th generation descendents, Robert and Sam Hill-Smith and their families.
Yalumba is one of the few wineries with its own on-site cooperage and vine nursery and has earned a reputation for being viti-pioneers and innovators, particularly with the grape variety Viognier.
As a wine business operating in the rural environment for 150 years The Yalumba Wine Company recognizes the impact of its activities on the environment. In May 2007, Yalumba received the Climate Protection Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Yalumba is the first wine company in the world to receive this honor. Yalumba is also the first company to be officially recognized (in 2005) by the Australian Government's Greenhouse Office as a "Leader" in greenhouse gas management. Yalumba is the first Australian wine company, and one of the first enterprises operating in the agricultural sector, to undertake a Greenhouse Challenge cooperative agreement, having joined the program in 1999.
Yalumba has adopted a life cycle approach and undertaken proper initiatives to maintain continuous improvement in energy conservation, efficient energy consumption, recycling, fuel substitution and clean technology. Moreover, Yalumba is setting aside land for conservation and carbon sequestration.
