Winemaker Notes

Garnet-red with an amber hue. Beautiful aromatic array with dried fig, raisin and tobacco; very complex with a touch of minerality. Well-balanced with an harmonious backbone and an elegant texture ; jammy black fruits mingle with liquorice in a long, refreshing finish. A deep and intense wine.

The 2006 Yacochuya is a wine that number crunchers will despise (16% alcohol, 4.09pH) and that hedonists will go ga-ga over. Made from 100% Malbec and aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak, it offers up a veritable cocktail of prunes, plums, and even dates that leapfrogs from the glass. Full-bodied, fat, and succulent, to say that it has gobs of flavor is an understatement. Somewhere in this wine there is enough structure and baby fat to carry it through 2020. It's akin to getting a full-body massage through the mouth.

Yacochuya, South America
Yacochuya Winery Image
Michel Rolland was first brought to Argentina and Cafayete by Arnaldo Etchart in 1988. Seduced by the remarkable potential of an old 16 acre plot that at the time was the highest elevation known vineyard site on earth (6,700 feet), Michel and Arnaldo created a partnership to make the wines of San Pedro de Yacochuya. Two red wines are made at this estate, their powerful/blockbuster Malbec, simply called “Yacochuya,” which is the winery flagship and one of the iconic wines of South America, and "San Pedro de Yacochuya,” which you can call their “second wine,” an elegant blend of 85% Malbec and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and one that Tim Atkin once described as “almost Rhône-like, with notes of black olive and lavender, some pepper spice.”

Most distinguished and celebrated from Argentina’s Mendoza, Malbec has seen runaway success since the early 2000s. Mendoza’s agreeable, continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold snowy winters allows the perfect conditions for growing outstanding Malbec. This grape is easy to like for its lusty, deep flavors and aromas of blackberry, plum, red cherry, autumn spice and tilled earth. It’s easy to find delicious, fruit-driven, affordable everyday examples and in prices beyond, quite exceptional ones with dense, supple textures that make them capable of aging.
