Winemaker Notes

This wine reminds me very much of our 2002 Russian River. The nose is fragranced with ripe plums, wild blackberry jam, violets, forest floor, crème brûlée and honey-cured bacon. Your mouth fills with blackberries, blueberries, sassafras, nutmeg and toasty oak. The ripe, concentrated tannins are rich and round across your palate and the balanced acidity and berry finish is long and lingering. A fuller bodied wine that should get better with 5-6 years of age.

There's something in this wine that's rivetingly true to its place, a classical simplicity, as if smelling cherry blossoms in a coastal forest, or picking raspberries along Westside Road. It has the gentleness of great Russian River pinot, and a bright, happy flavor that lasts for minutes. From five neighboring vineyards, including Rochioli and Flax, with 90 percent of the fruit coming from Williams Selyem estate plantings at Drake and Litton. Winemaker Bob Cabral believes it's his best Russian River pinot noir in years.

A perennial favorite in these pages, this Pinot hails from the very heart of what many, including ourselves, view as one of the top two or three Pinot patches outside of the very best in Burgundy. It starts with exceptionally concentrated fruit redolent of sweet red cherries kissed with notes of vanilla, honey, toast and clove-like spices and continues with a delight-fully supple entry texture and a firming backbone of evident but not intrusive tannins.

Williams Selyem Winery Proprietors John and Kathe Dyson Winery Image

Williams Selyem Winery began as a simple dream of two friends, Ed Selyem and Burt Williams, who pursued weekend winemaking as a hobby in 1979 in a garage in Forestville, California, and made their first commercial vintage in 1981. In less than two decades, Burt and Ed created a cult-status winery of international acclaim. Together they set a new standard for Pinot Noir winemaking in the United States, aligning Sonoma County's Russian River Valley in the firmament of the best winegrowing regions of the world. Today John and Kathe Dyson, who purchased the winery from Burt and Ed in 1998, carry on the passion for Pinot Noir winemaking without compromise. As for the wines... they just keep getting better and better.
