Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Extremely concentrated flavors of blackberry, cassis, mocha and sassafras explode in your mouth. The aromas are similar, but with a high-toned, perfumed/floral edge to them. The rich, mouth-coating tannins give way to a long jammy finish that is clean, balanced and refreshing.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2006 Zinfandel Forchini Vineyard (14.6% alcohol) has a dense ruby/purple color, a fabulous concentration of black fruits intermixed with camphor, pepper, seaweed, and charcoal. It is a beautiful wine that is earthy, full-bodied, and impressively pure."
92 Points

"Opaque ruby. Roomfilling bouquet offers kirsch, blackberry, dark chocolate, roasted coffee and dried flowers. Deeply concentrated red and dark berry compote flavors coat the palate and are gently framed by soft tannins. Picks up bitter chocolate and candied licorice on the long, weighty finish. There's nothing shy about this zin, which I'd serve with strongly flavored foods, even ripe or blue cheeses."

Although it's not from America (Croatia has been named its origin), it does seem quite at home in the vineyards of California.
