    Winemaker Notes

Head west in Sonoma County, then go a little farther, and you’ll find yourself in the extreme landscape of Wild Ridge. Winemaker Craig McAllister revels in the wild nature of the vines in his care, and he is able to create memorable wines from the most intense conditions. This is an uncommon wine sourced from Block 14 of the Wild Ridge Vineyard in Annapolis, at an altitude of 700-900 feet. Pinot Noir vines were planted here in 1999 on prized Goldridge soils bordered by thick strands of Coastal Redwoods and conifers. Block 14 comprises sub-blocks A-D and a mix of Dijon clones 667 and 777. The wine shows vibrant, fruit-driven aromas intertwined with typical coastal markers of orange zest and cedar. The wine will be unfined, but will be filtered, and it presents a singular opportunity to showcase a single block and the Dijon clones that have historically been the backbone of the Wild Ridge blend.

Wild Ridge Pinot Noir is grown in our vineyard located on the far western edge of California’s Sonoma Coast. The 900 foot elevation site is a stone’s throw from the hamlet of Annapolis, an extreme setting blessed with a steady supply of cool marine air, goldridge soils and dense forest surrounding the perimeter. This wildness comes through as clear as a bell: vibrant blue fruit, spice and savory elements flow through a texture that’s both mouth-filling and stony – the mirror expression of our Wild Ridge Terroir.

The Sonoma Coast AVA is large in area but, not counting overlapping regions like Russian River Valley, only has a few thousand acres of grapevines—and it’s no wonder. Much of the region is rugged and not easily accessible. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean’s fog and cool breezes limits the varieties that can be cultivated, but it proves to be an ideal environment for high quality Pinot Noir.

Since fog is a frequent fact of life here, as are heavy marine layers that sometimes bring rain, the best vineyards are wisely planted above the fog line, on picturesque ridges that capture enough sun to provide even ripening. That, with the overnight drop in temperature that reliably preserves acidity, results in fine expressions of Pinot Noir that often receive tremendous critic and consumer praise alike, and are often in high demand.
