Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Bold and rich with developed aromatics of blackberry, cherry, cedar, leather and cocoa powder. The palate continues with deep blackberry jam, huckleberry and black currant. The oak structure guides the way to lingering cocoa powder on the finish.

Blend: 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot

Professional Ratings

  • 88
Featuring grippy tannins, this medium-weight style touches on cherry, cassis, leather and spice flavors, finishing with freshness and vitality.
  • 88
Waterbrook consistently provides high-quality wines at affordable prices and this appealing Cabernet is just another example. Dark cherry, cocoa and barrel notes from a kiss of new American oak (19%) lead to a palate with broad cherry flavors and grainy tannins.

Waterbrook, Washington
Waterbrook Waterbrook Tasting Room Winery Image

In the early 1980s, a handful of visionaries set out to realize the potential of Walla Walla as a winemaking force. Waterbrook founders set up the town’s fourth bonded winery in 1984, and in the process fostered a culture of camaraderie among fellow Walla Walla winemakers, growers and friends.

Today you’ll find a town whose rich history is matched only by its soaring success in wine. The charming town of Walla Walla has flourished, and so has Waterbrook. With a 2008-built, state-of-the-art winery, visitor center and a nearby estate vineyard, Waterbrook has created a destination for wine lovers and simultaneously helped put Walla Walla wine on the world’s stage.

Never straying from its principles to create fruit-forward, varietally correct wines, Waterbrook marked 30 years of winemaking in 2014. In that time it has earned more than 100 combined Best Buys and 90+ point scores.

Waterbrook is recognized for producing wines that exemplify our outstanding vineyards in the Walla Walla Valley and the Columbia Valley. From vineyard to bottle, every detail of production is carried out by a committed team led by winemaker John Freeman. Whether touring Washington Wine Country or opening a bottle of Waterbrook wine at home, we look forward to you experiencing “what Washington tastes like.”

Image for Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon content section

Washington produces so many exciting wines, and that definitely includes Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. With over 10,000 acres under vine, Cabernet Sauvignon is now the most widely-grown varietal in the state. Terrific examples hail from sub-appellations like Red Mountain, Wahluke Slope, Horse Heaven Hills and Walla Walla Valley. One of the fascinations of these Columbia Valley Cabs is that they so often seem to have one foot in the New World and one in the Old. Representing the former are characteristics like the ripe, forward fruit that results from long sunny days during the growing season (up to two hours longer than in much of California). Old World similarities include an undeniable brightness from acidity, as well as notes of herbs, graphite and a dusty, sometimes gravelly minerality.

Whether you’re looking for a budget bottle for everyday enjoyment, or a stellar, world-class wine with tremendous aging potential, Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon wines can deliver the goods! Among the many fine options are bottles from Columbia Crest, Chateau Ste. Michelle, L’ecole #41, Quilceda Creek and Leonetti.
