Based in the Stevens Valley, a few miles southwest of the town of Margaret River, Voyager Estate is a series of neighboring vineyards on gravelly loam soils. A relatively cool summer in the region brought this cabernet blend to fine maturity, and bottle age has taken it toward a supple roundness that’s immediately apparent when you open the bottle. It develops with air, from hints of verbena and bergamot toward savory tones of currants and black olives. The tension in the wine gives it a distinctive shape, feeling concentrated in the middle, then powering up in the end, the tannins revving up and shifting the gravitas of the wine’s core into the memory of something fresh and lively.

Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot is evolving nicely into a crème de cassis, baked plum and incense laced character with nuances of sautéed herbs, tobacco leaves, cigar box and dusty earth. The palate offers elegant, maturing fruit with a lovely spice cake character coming through on the long, velvety finish. This is classic Margaret River Cabernet, drinking beautifully now.

Voyager Estate is a small, second-generation, family-owned estate in Stevens Valley, Margaret River, Western Australia. Currently undergoing full organic conversion, their Estate is one of Australia’s most ambitious and innovative producers of world-class Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. All wines are 100% estate-grown, made and bottled, and reflect the unique qualities of Stevens Valley, with its undulating slopes, warm summers and cooling maritime breezes. Their aim is to shine a light on what makes their unique place in Margaret River so special. Both through how they grow and make their wine, and how they share and experience it. Lead by Head of Winemaking and Viticulture Steve James, Steve is the custodian of a rich winemaking tradition, fostered by close collaboration between the winemaking and viticulture teams. Steve’s winemaking philosophy starts in the vineyards. From the outset, Steve has focused on sustainable farming, vine balance, clonal selection, and vineyard management in close collaboration with the winery team. This focus has allowed the vines to shine and become more adept at expressing the purity and character of the individual vineyard blocks.
