Alcohol By Volume: 14.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

A deep, dark purple color with violet notes. The nose displays aromas of ripe cherries, port wine, and smoked ham, accompanied by light herbal notes. The palate presents notes of fig, chocolate, and rum-raisins. Its sweet, voluptuous tannins and crisp acidity result in a long, lingering finish.

Critical Acclaim

"Glass-staining purple. Black fruit preserves, violet and dark chocolate on the nose, boosted by a strong jolt of smoky bacon fat that gains strength with air. Supple and generous in the mouth, highlighted by deep, spicy black and blue fruit flavors and exotic florality. Dense but lithe, showing very good finishing clarity and persistent sweetness."

The home base of Syrah is the Northern Rhone, where it creates the exclusive wines of Hermitage and Cote Rotie. On the less pricy side, the Rhone makes Syrah-based wines in Crozes...
