Winemaker Notes

The 2006 vintage of Vinifera Vineyards "Vitis" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits notes of white chocolate, bay leaf, tobacco and sweet tannins combined with fresh blue and black fruits. This wine is incredibly rich and multilayered and has a finish that stays on the palate for several minutes. On the nose, this wine tells a story of Rutherford Dust, and intensity not found in anything at this price point.

Here’s a young, vital, impressive 100% Cabernet. It’s dry, full-bodied and rich in classic flavors of blackberries, black currants, graphite and minerals, wrapped into silky tannins. Superb oak integration lends notes of vanilla and sandalwood. Just gorgeous in the mouth, filled with class and elegance. Now–2014, at least.

Vinifera Vineyards, California
In the early 1970s there were no tasting rooms in the Napa Valley and prunes were the dominant crop, but there was a history of wine grape cultivation in the area and a handful of families, including my own, saw the potential. Back then the idea was to prove that we could make great wines here, wines to rival those of weightier pedigrees. The Beckstoffer family established Vinifera Vineyards in 1973, and we've been growing grapes ever since.

Fast forward 40 years, and this sleepy farming Valley is now readily acknowledged as a leading wine growing region. I've had my hands in the dirt here for practically my whole life, and when the siren's song of winemaking hit me, I knew I had a rare advantage. Great wine is the product of great grapes, and I just happened to know where to find some. In 2005, I launched the Vinifera Vineyards label as a nod to my family roots, and as an homage to the many pioneers who set out to share their passion for Napa Valley wine with the world.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
