Vine Hill Scintilla Vineyard Pinot Noir 2008
Pinot Noir from Carneros, California
Scintilla is a robust wine, exhibiting aromas of black cherry and caramel. It boasts a pleasing flavor profile of cherry soda, chocolate-covered fruit, and a hint of linalool. Brilliant in hue, this is a wine filled with a mixture of tart red fruit and voluptuous black fruit. A wine well suited for rich food.
PinotReport - "Medium ruby color; deep briary aromas with dark raspberry and cranberry notes; rich mix of dark fruit flavors, with tea and cola notes; fine grained tannins; good structure and balance; long finish. Deep, dark fruit-driven Pinot with very fine tannns. Needs time to open up."

There is something really satisfying about seeing a long-held dream unfolding before your eyes. Such is the circumstance in which Nick Guerrero, Managing Partner of Vine Hill Winery finds himself. Nick and his team have embarked on a journey that continues a long tradition of winemaking in the historic Vine Hill Wine District. Established in 1867 by George and John Jarvis the wine district housed the Santa Cruz Mountain Wine Company of which John Jarvis was the president until his death in 1892. Jarvis also founded Union Vineyard in 1877. It is this historic site that is today's Vine Hill Winery.
Nick sees himself as the team's "coach." He lets each individual create their own template for success and is always there to lend a guiding hand as needed. "Putting other's first" was not always Nick's mantra, but as he has evolved, so has his opinion on managing people. He believes that the winery environment engenders an individual's reach for excellence and the ability to collaborate for the common good. Nick understands that this opportunity cannot always be seized in larger, corporate environments, or on the manufacturing room floor. That is why he feels extremely lucky to be surrounded by such outstanding individuals in an environment where their greatest success is celebrating great winemaking and all the efforts that support this goal. About CarnerosView a map of Carneros wineries
Technically a part of Napa Valley, the Carneros region straddles both Sonoma & Napa counties. It's the Napa region closest to the San Francisco peninsula and the San Pablo Bay, which is instrumental in controlling the climate of the area. The winds from the San Pablo bay create a cool weather pattern ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Notable FactsBoth Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Carneros are delicate, yet complex, with firm structure and acidity. And while the pair are the most popular varieties of the region, some winemakers have branched out, particularly with Syrah. The cool climate Syrah of Carneros is well structured and stylistically similar to Syrah from the Northern Rhone, though often fuller-bodied.
About CaliforniaIt's not rare to see a wine's country of origin listed as "California." A country into itself in the wine world, California makes enough varieties and styles to match many European wine countries. It produces a diverse range of wines that span the quality spectrum.
The most famous of the California wine regions is Napa Valley, and these wines are certainly outstanding – but it's not as broad and diverse as its larger neighbor, Sonoma County. Down south, Santa Barbara's Santa Maria Valley is well-known for its Rhône blends, as well as cool-climate varieties like Pinot and Chardonnay. The Central Coast, the largest California AVA, has many different microclimates that lead to a wide range of wines with many sub-AVAs.

I'm not usually a fan of Pinot Noirs, but this one was quite decent - much better than the more expensive Pali Keefer Ranch.311/19/2011Not great...flavors aren't very robust. Thin.111/18/2011Only opened on bottle of the 2 I bought. The nose was horrible! It tasted ok. It's on its way out. Would not buy again. Would like a refund.411/16/2011
