Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Pretty peach and lime blossom aromas. It has a pleasant round mouth-feel with white peach and citrus flavors framed with white stones and bitter almond. This is nicely balanced wine with a lively citrus finish.

Albariño in California? Why not? I have tasted a few and most have been kind of ok, the 2013 Verdad, however is really good. Fresh and well balanced. Light straw color; elegant and aromatic in the nose, some white peaches, a light note of flower and mineral; medium bodied, zesty on the palate; peach fuzz, mineral and flowers in the flavors, some evolution showing; brisk aftertaste. (Tasted: August 24, 2015, San Francisco, CA)

Verdad, California
Verdad Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard Winery Image
Verdad is devoted to making Spanish grape varietal wines that express true varietal character as well as the vineyard’s terroir. The grapes are sourced from organic and biodynamic vineyards and are minimally processed in the cellar. The philosophy behind the winemaking is to grow the best fruit possible, pick at optimum balance and let the wines reflect what the vineyards have created.

The first vintage for Verdad was 2000. Verdad makes a dry Grenache based Rosé, a Santa Ynez Valley Albariño and Tempranillo as well as a Demeter certified biodynamic Albariño and Tempranillo from the Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard. The total production is about 2000 cases.

Bright and aromatic with distinctive floral and fruity characteristics, Albariño has enjoyed a surge in popularity and an increase in plantings over the last couple of decades. Thick skins allow it to withstand the humid conditions of its homeland, Rías Baixas, Spain, free of malady, and produce a weighty but fresh white. Somm Secret—Albariño claims dual citizenship in Spain and Portugal. Under the name Alvarinho, it thrives in Portugal’s northwestern Vinho Verde region, which predictably, borders part of Spain’s Rías Baixas.

California’s coolest wine growing area, Edna Valley excels in the production of high quality Central Coast wines like Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Rhône Blends and aromatic white wines. It has a cool Mediterranean climate and an incredibly long growing season, giving late-ripening varieties plenty of opportunity to develop great phenolic complexity.

Its northwest to southeast orientation creates a direct path for cool Pacific air and fog to penetrate the valley from the Los Osos and Morro Bay area inwards. Low hillsides of both calcareous and volcanic soils are home to much of the vineyard acreage of the Edna Valley.
