Wine Style Guide
Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.
Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.
Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.
Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.
Alcohol By Volume: 14.5%
Alcohol By Volume Guide
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.
To create a Red Blend that reveals layer after layer of rich flavors and luscious textures, we combined five distinct varietals from our three estate vineyards in Chile. Merlot from our cool climate Casablanca estate adds bright notes of cherry and raspberry; Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from our Apalta estate adds dark notes of fig, blackberry and black current, as well as richness and structure; Carmenere and Cabernet Franc from our Marchigue vineyard in Colchagua Valley completes this blend with roundness, earthiness and a hint of spice. To create a seamless blend of superior character, we co-fermented several varieties together, such as Carmenere with Cabernet Franc, and Merlot with Syrah. The result is a beautiful blend with richness and depth.

great bold red, just enough spice to make it interesting

An easy-drinking red, the 2012 Veramonte Red Blend follows the recent treand of very slightly sweet red (this one staddles the area between dry and sweet) have become quite popular in the marketplace. Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenere and a little bit of Syrah and Cabernet Franc. Smooth in the finish, of course.
Nose starts off in classic Chilean fashion: dark fruit, spice box, and earthy forest wood. It quickly and completely devolves into melted-down dark jolly rancher juice on the palate, however. I was quite impressed with Veramonte's El Caballero cab sauv and had moderate hopes for this wine (since both come in at similar price points), but this really just seems as if it was made to cater to pure sugar-fiends. If I could, I might go 1.5 stars based solely on the solid nose, but this effort deserves more of a round-down than a round-up. 72.
A strange blend. It starts sweet, and then is dry. Later, a lingering sweet taste re-appears. It is a hodge-podge of a blend. Ultimately, too sweet for me.

Veramonte represents a return to Agustin Huneeus' Chilean roots. When he spearheaded development of the Veramonte Estate in 1990, there were less than 100 acres of grapevines planted in the Casablanca Valley.
The coastal mountain ranges surrounding the Casablanca estate create a unique terroir with a diversity of microclimates. The valley floor's cool climate is reminiscent of...

Learn About Chile
Long and thin, Chile has a lot of land north to south. The wine region here is a series of districts based near Santiago. The vineyards are protected by the Pacific on the west and the Andes mountains on the east. This could help explain why the climate changes more from east to west than north to south - also why the country has remained phylloxera free....
