    Winemaker Notes

Aromas of dark chocolate, mint, boysenberry and currant followed by flavors of vanilla, toffee, and cassis. well balanced tannins, beautiful color and a rich mouthfeel.

This Cabernet Sauvignon is an artistic blend of wines made from hillside grapes grown in the valleys of Sonoma and Dry Creek. For balance, structure and complexity, Cabernet Sauvignon wines from Lake County and Alexander Valley round out the blend.

The fruit for this wine was harvested in late September/October after 2002's exceptional, mild growing season. Following fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine was aged for twenty-four months in 60 gallon French and American oak barrels.

Valley of the Moon wines are steeped in the history of Sonoma Valley. The name Valley of the Moon borrows its origin from the translation of the Native American word Sonoma. With a winemaking tradition as rich and deep as the soil where the grapes are grown, Valley of the Moon’s wine program today features all that this region has to offer.

Valley of the Moon has a wine for each palate and pairing. All of the wines highlight the Sonoma region. Find a new favorite Chardonnay – oaked or unoaked – or try the popular Pinot Gris - Viognier Blend. Red wine lovers will enjoy the single varietal Zinfandels, Pinot Noirs and Cabernet Sauvignons. Looking for a crowd-pleaser? Try one of the popular blends: Blend 1887 is jammy, juicy and fun while Blend 1941 is bold, complex and rich. For a special occasion or a connoisseur experience open a bottle of Valley of the Moon Reserve: the winemaking team reserves the best grapes for these fine wines, crafting and aging them with extra care.

While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
