Winemaker Notes

The "Family Selection" is a nod to the long family history behind the Giol clan. A scant 3,000 bottles were made, and it is from the same family-owned 16 year-old vineyard in La Consulta, Valle de Uco, at 3,500 feet above sea level, planted at a density of 1,550 plants per acre, and 100% sustainably farmed. The same manual harvest and then double sorting by hand take place, and the wine undergoes 30 days of maceration followed by spontaneous malolactic fermentationin oak barrels. Only wild yeasts are used, and it is unfiltered and unfined, then aged for 16-18 months in new French oak barrels. Its color is a gorgeous dark purple, and it sends out lovely aromas of dried violets, blackberries, vanilla and spicy, smoky notes. On the palate it is a more concentrated, intense version of the Malbec Reserva, echoing its blackberry, violet and plum flavors but with a voluminous sophistication from the new French oak.

From vines located in La Consulta in the Uco Valley, the 2010 Valle de Nencias Family Selection Malbec has a shamelessly decadent bouquet of luscious red cherries, kirsch and peppermint that you cannot help but adore. The palate is soft and rounded with plush tannins. It could have been cloying, but instead there is a satisfying thread of acidity and a caressing, oaky finish with smoke and hickory. For this style of wine, it is thoughtfully crafted and comes recommended. Drink now-2017.

Celebrated for its bold flavors and supple texture, Malbec has enjoyed runaway success in Argentina since the late 20th century. The grape originated in Bordeaux, France, where it historically contributed color and tannin to blends. A French agronomist, who saw great potential for the variety in Mendoza’s hot, high-altitude landscape, brought Malbec to Argentina in 1868. Somm Secret—If you’re trying to please a crowd, Malbec is generally a safe bet with its combination of dense fruit and soft tannins.

By far the largest and best-known winemaking province in Argentina, Mendoza is responsible for over 70% of the country’s enological output. Set in the eastern foothills of the Andes Mountains, the climate is dry and continental, presenting relatively few challenges for viticulturists during the growing season. Mendoza, divided into several distinctive sub-regions, including Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley, is the source of some of the country’s finest wines.

For many wine lovers, Mendoza is practically synonymous with Malbec. Originally a Bordelaise variety brought to Argentina by the French in the mid-1800s, here it found success and renown that it never knew in its homeland where a finicky climate gives mixed results. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Pinot Noir are all widely planted here as well (and sometimes even blended with each other or Malbec). Mendoza's main white varieties include Chardonnay, Torrontés, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.
