Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 13.6%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Our 2009 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir has a ruby color with purple highlights and a complex nose of fresh rose petals, lilacs, candied apples, sweet baking spices and a hint of peppermint. It has a rich, broad attack on the palate and notes of caramel, butterscotch and ripe, red fruit. This expressive wine has a balanced finish of fruit, spice, bright natural acidity and fine grained tannins.

Critical Acclaim

"Bright medium red. Initially inexpressive on the nose, hinting at dark cherry, cola, underbrush and menthol, but gaining verve as it opened in the glass. Fleshier but less vibrant than the Bien Nacido version, at first dominated by dry and rather uncompromising soil-driven flavors but displaying more red fruits with air. This pinot expanded nicely, showing very good body and tannic support. "

Twomey Cellars originated with a remarkable vineyard, the Soda Canyon Ranch in southeastern Napa Valley, which the Duncan family - owners of Silver Oak Cellars - acquired in 1999. Planted with the finest French clones in well-drained volcanic soils, the Merlot that is grown there possesses such extraordinary complexity that it calls for a wine of its own. Silver Oak's winemaker,...

Learn About Sonoma County

Twice as large as Napa in size, Sonoma County only makes about a half the amount of wine as her northeasterly neighbor. But Sonoma, with her size, is able to vouch for more diversity within her borders, including sub-AVAs that are climatically varied. The atmosphere of Sonoma is decidedly laid back and down home country style. But in wines, they are keeping up with the...

Pinot Noir hails from Burgundy, a region known for crafting the most collectible and sought-after wines from this varietal. Not only does Pinot reign in Burgundy, it is also...
