Winemaker Notes

This is a wine that delivers on its promise! Impressive depths of varietal character and velvety richness on the palate. Earthy aromas of cedar and peppery spice pair with the lush flavors of juicy plums and black cherries. Sweet round oak sustains the elegant spicy flavors through the lengthy finish. Pepper-crusted meat and spicy desserts are a natural combination. The blend is 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc.

Turnbull Turnbull Home Vineyard Winery Image
In the Spring of 1993 California publisher, Patrick O'Dell, purchased Johnson Turnbull Vineyards and renamed the property Turnbull Wine Cellars. The remodeling and expansion of the facility has been completed. In addition, the wines have gone through change due to the inclusion of fruit from additional vineyards purchased by Patrick. Turnbull Wine Cellars has 145 acres of vineyards within the Oakville and Calistoga districts of Napa Valley representing a diverse range of microclimates and terroirs within these fabled grape-growing centers of Napa Valley.

As Napa Valley’s third most planted grape, Napa Valley Merlot shows time and time again its potential to produce exceptional results. Napa’s vaunted combination of climate, soil and the human factor of winemaking expertise lead to big, ripe, cellar-worthy and world-class versions.

Whether made by itself in single varietal bottlings or as an important role in Bordeaux Blends, Merlot continues a prominent role in this famous region. While Cabernet typically takes the lead role, Merlot’s contribution—even at 10% to 20% or so—is significant indeed. Often described as “the flesh on Cabernet’s bones,” Merlot lends a soft, round and plush character that beautifully complements Cabernet’s linear, full-throttle structure. Its flavors of plums plus subtle herbs and mint also dovetail nicely with Cabernet’s blackberry and cassis.
