    Winemaker Notes

Our 2005 Family Chardonnay displays the tropical flavors and great acidity typical of our Los Alamos Vineyard in Santa Barbara County. A small portion of fruit from our Vista Montone Vineyard in Napa added grilled nuts to the nose and creaminess to the texture. Fresh, bright, rich and zesty, this is one of our classiest Family Chardonnays to date.

Our 2005 Family Chardonnay features fruit from our Los Alamos Ranch Estate in Santa Barbara County (82.75%) and our Vista Montone Estate in south Napa (12.25%). While most of the wine (74%) was aged in stainless steel, a small portion (26%) spent two and a half months in a combination of new French, American and Hungarian oak barrels.

The Trinchero family has been making wine in the Napa Valley since 1948, and Trinchero Napa Valley serves to honor the legacy of founder, Mario Trinchero. Wines bearing the Trinchero Napa Valley label are luxury-class, predominantly single-vineyard, wines from their Napa Valley estates. Each is painstakingly handcrafted and produced in limited quantities. They source their grapes from 100 acres of estate vineyards in prime Napa Valley appellations, including St. Helena, Mount Veeder, Rutherford and Atlas Peak.

California’s most praised white wine, Chardonnay is also the state’s most planted white grape variety. Diverse terrain and microclimates allow for an incredible range of wine styles.

Chardonnay planted in the cooler, coastal zones takes on bright characteristics like lemon zest, key lime, green apple and wet flint. For this style, look to the chilly Sonoma Coast, Carneros, Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Lucia Highlands and Edna Valley.

The inland zones of California’s coast, such as the Russian River, Sonoma, Napa and Livermore Valleys maintain a more Goldilocks-esque climate where both styles go. Early picking retains acidity and creates a leaner style but leaving the grapes to hang creates an approachable Chardonnay, balancing richness and finesse.

Chardonnay also plays a major part in the sparkling wine production of the Anderson Valley and Carneros.
