Winemaker Notes

Our Central Park West Vineyard, named in a nostalgic nod to the New York City origins of the Trinchero family, is located at the southern end of the St. Helena appellation. This 22-acre vineyard is a level site with deep, loamy soils, good sun exposure and excellent air circulation—the ideal situation for producing classic Napa Valley Cabernet.

Even though this wine bears a New York City name, it screams Napa Valley. In 2008, we hand-picked this vineyard multiple times over a three week period. With these valley floor origins and warm St. Helena climate, this is an opulent, eminently drinkable Cabernet with great dark color. Luscious red currant and black fruit aromas intermix with vanilla and blackberry cobbler like flavors leading into a satisfying, smooth finish with subtle hints of white pepper.

The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Central Park West (the name is apparently a tribute to the Trinchero family's home town, New York City) comes from a 22-acre vineyard planted in the deep, loamy soils of the valley floor at the southern edge of the St. Helena appellation. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by earthy, Provencal garrigue-like notes intermixed with high quality unsmoked cigar tobacco. This is the softest, easiest to drink, most precocious and evolved of the 2008 single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons. Medium to full-bodied and seductive, it is ideal for drinking over the next 10-15 years.

The Trinchero family has been making wine in the Napa Valley since 1948, and Trinchero Napa Valley serves to honor the legacy of founder, Mario Trinchero. Wines bearing the Trinchero Napa Valley label are luxury-class, predominantly single-vineyard, wines from their Napa Valley estates. Each is painstakingly handcrafted and produced in limited quantities. They source their grapes from 100 acres of estate vineyards in prime Napa Valley appellations, including St. Helena, Mount Veeder, Rutherford and Atlas Peak.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
