Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

With a deep garnet-red color, the wine shows aromas of plum, cherry, tobacco, chocolate and coffee. On the palate, a subtle start precedes a full character on the mid-palate, then the wine becomes powerful. The red fruit, mocha and creme brulée notes are prominent, with a very elegant, long finish, and ripe, powerful tannins.

Food Match: venison, roasts, red meat, grilled meats, game, beef, BBQ.

The 2006’s were bottled in early April 2008, just a week before I tasted them. The 2006 Malbec Vina Federico de Villafane is opaque purple-colored with superb aromatic array of wood smoke, mineral, crushed stone, blackberry and licorice. One the palate this large-scaled wine is plush, dense, savory, and beautifully balanced.

Dense, but creamy and approachable with lush fig, raspberry ganache and crushed boysenberry fruit flavors weaving through notes of mocha, melted licorice and graphite. The finish is long and rich. For the hedonist crowd.

Most distinguished and celebrated from Argentina’s Mendoza, Malbec has seen runaway success since the early 2000s. Mendoza’s agreeable, continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold snowy winters allows the perfect conditions for growing outstanding Malbec. This grape is easy to like for its lusty, deep flavors and aromas of blackberry, plum, red cherry, autumn spice and tilled earth. It’s easy to find delicious, fruit-driven, affordable everyday examples and in prices beyond, quite exceptional ones with dense, supple textures that make them capable of aging.
