Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 12.7%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Its depth and richness are immediately evident in the full ruby color and ample bouquet. The chewy, abundant fruit, silky texture, good body, balance and extract, make this a very food-friendly red that can be enjoyed both with pasta, risotto and first courses, and with meat-based dishes (don't miss trying it with bistecca alla fiorentina if you should visit the region). Best from two to seven years.

Critical Acclaim

"Wow. Love the milk chocolate, dried cherry, mint and licorice character in this Chianti Classico. Full body, with silky tannins and a juicy finish."

Learn About Toscolo

Think Tuscan. That's Toscolo, Neil & Maria Empson's labor of love from a longtime passion for this extraordinary region. The name itself is a tribute to Tuscany: a Renaissance Italian word, it means "Tuscan boy." The Empsons chose their friend and star oenologist Franco Bernabei to style the wines with Neil himself. Nothing was left to chance in order to make the Empsons' proprietary brand their ideal Tuscan credentials. Maria Gemma Empson personally designed the ultraclassic packaging and the wines' characteristic "ancient seal," bearing the features of the eponymous "Tuscan boy."

Learn About Tuscany

Tuscany is also home to the indigenous Italian grape variety, Sangiovese. Most of the wine coming from Tuscany is made from some clone of this...

Learn About Sangiovese

Sangiovese (SAHN-gee-oh-VAY-zee) Blood of Jove (literally translated) The principal grape of Chianti - in fact, the principle grape of all of Tuscany - has had its ups and downs. For a stint in the 70s and 80s, wines labeled Chianti contained cheap red wine packaged in a straw casked bottle, most popular for the candle holder it would become. But no more. Sangiovese re...
