Titus Napa Valley Zinfandel is produced from grapes grown in our family vineyard on Silverado Trail just North of St. Helena. The vines are over 25 years old and grown without irrigation to produce low yields of concentrated fruit. The 1999 Zinfandel exhibits all of the concentration and unique varietal character found in Zinfandel from an excellent vintage. Blackberry, red currants and spicy/briary notes highlight the nose. The mouth is rich and smooth with layers of super ripe fruit, chocolate and creamy American oak. Tannins add to the fullness and structure of the mouth feel but remain in the background. The 1999 growing season started out with extremely wet, cool weather, which lasted though the end of May, delaying bud break for 3-4 weeks. Due to a low cluster count, it appeared that the Zinfandel crop would be smaller than normal which turned out to be a good thing for ripening the grapes considering, the vines late start. The season culminated in hot, dry weather in late September, giving the vines the push they need to fully ripen the fruit and produce strong sugars and flavors.
