    Winemaker Notes

Our Zinfandel is sourced from ancient vineyards in Contra Costa County. This wine is a blend of 80% Zinfandel, 14% Petite Sirah, 3% Carignane, 2% Mataro, and 1% Alicante Bouschet. With an average age of vines over 100 years of which all are still being dry-farmed, there is a concentration of ripe blackberries and spice with a minerality (dusty berry) sneaking through. The Petite Sirah adds to this a firm tannin backbone along with boysenberries and pepper while the Carignane adds a pronounced fleshy mouth feel along with dark cherries and coffee notes. Our Mataro comes from vines that are now over 120 years old and add spice elements, violets, and complex phenolic structures that enhance the overall mouth feel and age ability of this wine. Enjoy this wine now or cellar in a cool location for 5-7 years

    Three Winery, California
Three Winery is a collaborative effort between Matt and Erin Cline. Matt's winemaking career began in 1982 helping his brother at his Oakley winery; in 1985 he began as winemaker and creative director at Cline Cellars. In addition to his position at Cline in 1986 he joined Conn Creek as the assistant winemaker which lasted through 1989. Over the course of his 16-year career at Cline, Matt was responsible for branding Cline Cellars' unique style of winemaking. Cline Cellars' wines have won countless awards including the 1998 Sonoma County Harvest Fair Sweepstakes Award for his 1996 Syrah Los Carneros, selected from among 587 wines. Cline Cellars has also had the distinction of being one of Wine & Spirits Magazine's American Wineries of the Year in both 1999 and 2001. In 2001, Matt started Trinitas Cellars where he concentrated on producing premium, old-vine Zinfandel, Mataro, and Petite Sirah. After building sales to over 9,000 cases, Matt and his wife Erin sold the brand at the end of 2006.

Following the sale of Trinitas Cellars, Matt launched S3x (S three times - small, sweet, sips) a botrytis late harvest wine from the Russian River Valley. At the 2008 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition the 2006 S3x Late Harvest Riesling won a Sweepstakes Award. The wine was amongst 4,235 wines from over 1,500 wineries across the U.S.A.

Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel has secured its title as the darling of California vintners by adapting well to the state's diverse microclimates and landscapes. Born in Croatia, it later made its way to southern Italy where it was named Primitivo. Fortunately, the imperial nursery of Vienna catalogued specimens of the vine, and it later made its way to New England in 1829. Parading the true American spirit, Zinfandel found a new home in California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Somm Secret—California's ancient vines of Zinfandel are those that survived the neglect of Prohibition; today these vines produce the most concentrated, ethereal and complex examples.

A large Northern California appellation centered on the San Francisco Bay Area, the San Francisco Bay AVA falls within the larger Central Coast AVA. The smaller appellations of Livermore Valley, Pacheco Pass, San Ysidro District and Santa Clara Valley AVAs fall within the San Francisco Bay boundaries, and all produce high-quality Central Coast wines.
