Tensley Syrah BMT (1.5 Liter Magnum) 2009
Syrah/Shiraz from California
As unbelievable as it is to us, our niece Bailey is now 16-years-old. She has really changed since our first BMT vintage back in 2003. Our once-little niece is now a beautiful, sophisticated young woman – with a driver's license! Time truly does fly. In making this year's BMT we added a little something different – 15% Turner Vineyard Syrah for a touch of pepper to spice up the finish. It just seemed a fitting reflection of Bailey's growing confidence and sharp wit. We also blended in 40% Tierra Alta Syrah to create a lovely, earthy base, 30% Colson Canyon Grenache for notes of black cherries and blueberries, and 15% Colson Canyon Syrah for notes of purple plums, cassis, chocolate and coffee. This wine is elegant and silky and definitely age-worthy. This BMT should continue to mature beautifully over the next ten years.
Vinous / Antonio Galloni - "An element of floral lift from the addition of 25% Colson Canyon Grenache distinguishes the 2009 BMT Syrah from the rest of the wines in this lineup. The BMT wraps around the palate with serious intensity. Layers of fruit continue to build as the wine flows through to its vibrant, perfumed finish. A last burst of juicy, ripe fruit rounds things out in compelling fashion."
Wine Spectator - "A rich, dense, extracted style, with loads of dried blackberry, wild berry, pepper, spice, sage and cedar that are compact and in need of cellaring. Slow to unfold, but as it does this reveals the tight mix of flavors and firm tannins."
Tensley Wines is a family owned and operated winery focusing on vineyard designated Syrah within Santa Barbara County.
Established in 1998, the first release of Tensley totaled just 100 cases. In 2006, our production reached 3,300 cases and included seven single-vineyard Syrahs, the most in Santa Barbara County.
Though we've grown in size, our philosophy has never changed - source the best fruit possible and let the vineyard speak for itself. View all Tensley Wines
About Other CaliforniaView a map of Other California wineries
California has nearly 100 American Viticulture Areas (AVAs) and accounts for almost 90% of wine production in the United States. In our section of Other California, we include wines from smaller AVAs as well as wines from the California AVA. Here are a few smaller AVAs you may see on the label:
Livermore Valley AVA, located right outside of San Francisco and home to wineries such as Wente.
Lodi County AVA, an AVA further east of San Francisco and known for its excellent, old-vine Zinfandels.
San Francisco Bay AVA, a sprawling AVA that covers Contra Costa, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties, to name a few. Wine that holds only the California AVA is typically a wine that includes grapes from a number of different AVAs, which leads to the general labeling of the wine as California. This does not denote the quality of the wine, only the diversity of where the grapes originate.
About CaliforniaIt's not rare to see a wine's country of origin listed as "California." A country into itself in the wine world, California makes enough varieties and styles to match many European wine countries. It produces a diverse range of wines that span the quality spectrum.
The most famous of the California wine regions is Napa Valley, and these wines are certainly outstanding – but it's not as broad and diverse as its larger neighbor, Sonoma County. Down south, Santa Barbara's Santa Maria Valley is well-known for its Rhône blends, as well as cool-climate varieties like Pinot and Chardonnay. The Central Coast, the largest California AVA, has many different microclimates that lead to a wide range of wines with many sub-AVAs.
