Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Full bodied with black currant jam, honey glazed dates and black peppered seasoned T-bone steak aromas intertwined with piercing boysenberry, rosemary rack of lamb, balsamic, blue cheese, bacon wrapped figs and intriguing tannins extended out over an intricate and balanced finish.

Professional Ratings

  • 90
Gravelly tannins underlie a plump core of black currant and black plum fruit, with smoky, meaty overtones adding depth to the finish. Finds a deft balance as the aftertaste lingers. Best from 2016 through 2020. 1,500 cases made.

Tamarack Cellars, Washington
Tamarack Cellars Tamarack Cellars Winery Video

When you visit the winery, you won't find us in a fancy chateau. Instead you'll find yourself immersed in the everyday workings of a Walla Walla winery, racking, blending and bottling wine, in a renovated firehouse located in a World War II Army Air Base.

Founded in 1998 by Ron and Jamie Coleman, Tamarack's first vintage consisted of 300 cases of Merlot. A year later Danny Gordon began working for Ron and over the years, took over the winemaking duties with the official title of "Maker of the Wine". Danny continues to excel in consistently crafting award winning, varietally correct wines sourced from some of the best vineyards in Washington.

It's about a passion for excellence. Tamarack Cellars buys grapes from the most renowned vineyards in Washington State and create our wines barrel by barrel. Whether it's the widely distributed Firehouse Red or one of the limited-production single vineyard reserve blends, Tamarack's wines offer a delicious expression of Washington vineyards' style and elegance in every bottle.

Washington produces so many exciting wines, and that definitely includes Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. With over 10,000 acres under vine, Cabernet Sauvignon is now the most widely-grown varietal in the state. Terrific examples hail from sub-appellations like Red Mountain, Wahluke Slope, Horse Heaven Hills and Walla Walla Valley. One of the fascinations of these Columbia Valley Cabs is that they so often seem to have one foot in the New World and one in the Old. Representing the former are characteristics like the ripe, forward fruit that results from long sunny days during the growing season (up to two hours longer than in much of California). Old World similarities include an undeniable brightness from acidity, as well as notes of herbs, graphite and a dusty, sometimes gravelly minerality.

Whether you’re looking for a budget bottle for everyday enjoyment, or a stellar, world-class wine with tremendous aging potential, Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon wines can deliver the goods! Among the many fine options are bottles from Columbia Crest, Chateau Ste. Michelle, L’ecole #41, Quilceda Creek and Leonetti.
