Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

This wine has aromas of pear and green apple, complemented by French oak and toasty brioche notes. On the palate, it is lush and elegant, with a creamy mouthfeel and flavors of white peach and pear. Round oak tannins are perfectly balanced by acidity, and there is a long finish that builds over time. The Sleepy Hollow Vineyard defines this wine, with power, richness, and bright acidity.

Silky and fresh with juicy pear and citrus; tangy and bright with good depth; long, lush and balanced
  • 90
A solid performance in a pretty oaky chardonnay, the 2012 Talbott Sleepy Hollow serves plenty of aromatic core fruit notes and lots of sweet oak nuances; lavish oak puts this wine in a place that many consumers will really enjoy. This is a well-designed wine.

Talbott Winery Video

Founded in 1982 by Robert Talbott this vineyard crafts luxurious, estate-grown Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Monterey County’s prestigious Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. Talbott Vineyards is defined by its iconic Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, where conditions are ideal for exceptional, cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Sleepy Hollow surrounds the estate winery in the breathtaking foothills of the Santa Lucia Highlands, affording the winemaking team, led by Winemaker David Coventry, the luxury of control with both their grapes and winery on the same site.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

Perhaps the most highly regarded appellation within Monterey County, Santa Lucia Highlands AVA benefits from a combination of warm morning sunshine and brisk afternoon breezes, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and fully. The result is concentrated, flavorful wines that retain their natural acidity. Wineries here do not shy away from innovation, and place a high priority on sustainable viticultural practices.

The climatic conditions here are perfectly suited to the production of ripe, rich Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. These Burgundian varieties dominate an overwhelming percentage of plantings, though growers have also found success with Syrah, Riesling and Pinot Gris.
