Deep red color with violet hints, this elegant wine reminds us of cherries and blueberries notes, together with violets, black pepper and touches of smoke and a spicy character. Full bodied and well balanced with an intense fruit concentration. The tannins are velvety, supple and mouth filling. The oak is perfectly integrated with the fruit giving the wine an extra complexity and depth.
Beautifully long and with a soft finish.
"The 2007 Payen is a cuvee of 100% Syrah selected from a 3 hectare parcel and made with 30% whole clusters. It was aged for 20 months in new French oak. Smoke, black olives, brier, mineral, and assorted black fruits lead to a wine with excellent natural acidity, outstanding density and richness, and terrific complexity. This exceptionally lengthy offering will benefit from another 4-5 years of cellaring and offers a drinking window extending from 2016 to 2022. It ranks with finest Syrahs I have tasted from South America.
The Wine Advocate
"Bright violet. Oak-accented, smoky aromas of black and blue fruits, cherry-vanilla and Indian spices, enlivened by a strong lashing of cracked pepper and star anise. Lush, creamy and assertive, offering sweet dark fruit compote flavors that are complemented by strong vanilla and roasted coffee nuances. Very modern in style, finishing broad, sweet, long and with clinging spiciness. Shows admirable energy and focus for a rich wine."
