Winemaker's Notes

The hilltop vines grown straight in Limestone rock without benefit of topsoil, exposed to sun throughout the day, and blasted by howling winds; all combine to produce wines with concentration and rich textures. As the Syrah vineyards have matured, the Hilltops Syrah, picked only from vines growing on ridgelines and crowns, has become the most Hedonistic and Calfornian of our extensive Syrah offering. Barrel aged for an extended 6 months on 25% new French oak, the wine is typically the most impressive and upfront upon release.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2006 Syrah Hilltops Estate exhibits an incredibly fragrant nose of honeysuckle, black cherries, and cassis intermixed with hints of smoke and that underlying floral component. Its provocative character is not dissimilar from a ripe Cote Rotie from the northern Rhone."
92 Points

"Vivid ruby. Fresh red berries and Asian spices on the nose; reminds me a bit of pinot. Spicy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors are finely etched and given depth by bitter chocolate and black tea. The most youthful of these 2006s, finishing with excellent clarity, minerality and thrust."

Learn About Stolpman Vineyards

Stolpman Vineyards is located in Ballard Canyon, just 15 miles from the coast. The location lends to warm days with cool nights. Tom and Marilyn Stolpman planted their first grapes in 1992 and today have 120 planted acres. The vineyard continues to be a dynamic location for the planting of Syrah, Sangiovese and Rousanne. Jeff Newton and Larry Finkle, along with our Vineyard Manager, Ruben Solorzano, have recently planted high density vines and continue to explore the standards of what it takes to make the best quality grapes from southern exposed vines and limestone soil.

Learn About Syrah/Shiraz

(seh-RAH/shee-RAHZ) It's a Smokin' Grape Syrah and Shiraz - same grape, different name. It's a popular and adept variety, growing in multiple regions and creating many different styles of wine. The home base of Syrah is the Northern Rhone, where it creates the exclusive wines of Hermitage and Cote Rotie. On the less pricy side, the Rhone makes Syrah-based wines in Crozes...
