Winemaker's Notes

"The 2003 Syrah (a 1,700 case blend that includes small quantities of Grenache and Counoise) exhibits hints of bacon fat and earthy, clove-like notes intermixed with black currants, spice box, and terroir characteristics. A French-styled Syrah with supple tannin, it is best drunk during its first 4-5 years of life."
-Wine Advocate

The 2003 estate Syrah is produced from over a half a dozen clones. The diversity of our Syrah clones allows us to craft wines with greater complexity and better balance. To enhance the wine's perfume and "Rhone" character, we always blend in a small percentage of wine made from our estate grown Grenache. The Stolpman estate syrah usually spends a shorter time in barrels, to better reflect the vintage's character and capture the delicious fruit-driven flavors of Central Coast syrah.

Learn About Stolpman Vineyards

Stolpman Vineyards is located in Ballard Canyon, just 15 miles from the coast. The location lends to warm days with cool nights. Tom and Marilyn Stolpman planted their first grapes in 1992 and today have 120 planted acres. The vineyard continues to be a dynamic location for the planting of Syrah, Sangiovese and Rousanne. Jeff Newton and Larry Finkle, along with our Vineyard Manager, Ruben Solorzano, have recently planted high density vines and continue to explore the standards of what it takes to make the best quality grapes from southern exposed vines and limestone soil.
