Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 15.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

A classic old vines Zinfandel that pays tribute to its heritage, this wine offers aromas of cigar box, pepper and spice. Flavors of ripe black cherry and vanilla bean are followed by a long, luscious finish.

Critical Acclaim

"Old-vine complexity is more apparent in this wine than in the Tres Viejos, perhaps because this wine is fresher. There's a firm, dynamic acidity that drives it, lifting the juicy fruit away from the deeper mineral tannins and then bringing them back together through a long finish; Both fresh fruit and tannins last on equal terms. Air brings up the details of plum skin, pear and jasmine, the wine exuberant as it rolls over and begs for some grilled meat."

This wine has an appealing spiciness and is more versatile than some Zins in terms of food pairings and a very nice wine for the money.

Not remotely close to a 92 rated wine. Maybe 88 or 89 tops. Too much heat, some pepper, and spice, but missing the zin sweetness and depth of fruitfulness. Decent for the price, $15.

Learn About Sonoma County

Twice as large as Napa in size, Sonoma County only makes about a half the amount of wine as her northeasterly neighbor. But Sonoma, with her size, is able to vouch for more diversity within her borders, including sub-AVAs that are climatically varied. The atmosphere of Sonoma is decidedly laid back and down home country style. But in wines, they are keeping up with the...

Learn About Zinfandel

Zinfandel(ZIN-fahn-dell) American Grape Zinfandel the American - or Californian - grape. Although it's not from America (Croatia has been named its origin), it does seem quite at home in the vineyards of California. During Prohibition, many Zinfandel vines survived as the high-yielding grape was popular both for home winemaking and communion wine, which is...
